Maui Bus Passes - New Pricing

Starting July 1st, the price of our local bus pass will be going down!

The County of Maui Department of Transportation announced today that changes to the Maui Bus monthly pass system, effective July 1, 2009, will reduce the cost of general All Route monthly bus passes from $45.00 per month to $35.00 per month; reduce the cost of student and senior (55 years and older) All Route monthly bus passes from $40.00 per month to $30.00 per month; and eliminate Single Route and Commuter monthly bus passes.

The All Route monthly bus pass is valid for unlimited rides on all Maui Bus routes including the commuter service. "The changes are intended to streamline the bus pass system, making Maui Bus even more efficient to meet the needs of the County's growing ridership," said Don Medeiros, County of Maui Director of Transportation.

Also effective July 1, 2009, monthly bus passes will be valid for a calendar month, from the first to the last day of the month.  Monthly bus passes will be available for purchase from the 25th of the previous month, and remain on sale until the 10th of each month.  Rides on all Wailuku and Kahului Loops and the Lahaina Villager route are free; single ride fares of $1 are available on Maui Bus' seven other routes: Kihei Villager, Kihei Islander, Upcountry Islander, Haiku Islander, Lahaina Islander, Kaanapali Islander and Napili Islander.

Beginning this Thursday, June 25, the new July 2009 bus passes will be available for purchase:

• From Maui Bus drivers;
• At the Maui County Business Resource Center, in the Maui Mall (mall hours);
• At the Wharf Cinema Center Management Office (weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays).

Maui Bus is a service provided by the County of Maui and operated by Roberts Hawaii. For more information, the public should contact Roberts Hawaii at 871-4838, or the County of Maui Department of Transportation at 270-7511. General bus schedule information can be found on all County buses, and is available online at www.mauicounty.gov/bus.

KULA IS ON FIRE- Gusty winds hampered Maui firefighters in Kula yesterday
afternoon when a fire broke out near King Kekaulike High School.  About 15
acres of a field were affected. The roads were blocked while they battled
the flames with lots of personnel and gear including 2 helicopters
attempting water drops in the windy weather.  No injuries or damage to 
homes were reported.

I am so glad I live on Maui, and not the Big Island...

Last month we visited the Big Island of Hawaii for a week.  We have a nice time-share unit that we've enjoyed for many many years.  This time we hit a bad week as far as weather goes.  Usually Kona is beautiful and sunny and hot.  Unfortunately the week we were there the normal tradewinds weren't blowing, which causes the VOG (volcanic smog) to build up.  A long stretch of voggy weather was upon us, and you could really see it in the air.  Hey, they can even see it from the Space Shuttle!

Look at these pictures taken from different locations.  At South Point - which is the southernmost part of the United States - you can see the extent of the vog on the slopes of the mountain, which would normally be clear.

In Kona town, the little harbor was sunny, but the vog still persisted on the mountain, as you can see here.  That's a historic site, the 'Ahu 'Ena Heiau which was the state capitol for a few years in the early 1800's.

Don't get me wrong, we love to visit the Big Island because it's so different from Maui.  But it sure was good to fly back home to Maui.  On Maui we don't often feel the effects of the vog from the Big Island.  Most of the time we have perfectly good weather and clear skies.  That vog is reason enough for me to be glad we live where we do.

Yesterday I had the privilege of previewing one of Maui's most beautiful resort homes at the new One Palau'ea Bay gated subdivision in Makena - Hale O'ola.  Wow!  What a beautiful home, with it's own 35' waterfall!  I was so amazed, I didn't even take pictures, and you know how I love to do that.  So I snapped a few on the way out.  There's a website for Hale O'ola, with lots of professional pictures, floor plans, details, etc.

What this picture doesn't show you is the most amazing construction and details, fit for a king.  Have you ever seen a bathtub made from one piece of stone?  I'm talking Fred Flintstone bathtub - one huge chunk of rock, rounded off and carved out inside.  There were 2 of these works of art, one in black and one in white, each nestled on a bed of smooth river pebbles!

The house is more like a cluster of connected buildings surrounding a central courtyard.  The courtyard really impressed me as soon as I entered the carved wooded front doors.  Can you imagine a courtyard with a 35' waterfall at one end, and an infinity edge pool at the other end?  In between there's a stream leading into the pool, and spa.  At the side of the pool is a barbecue pavilion with a full kitchen and a swim up bar!   With all the pocket doors tucked away, it was hard to tell if I was inside or outside as we toured the property.  The perfect climate of Wailea/Makena makes this possible, and many luxury homes embrace the concept.

Never mind the breathtaking ocean vistas - I wanted to see more of this incredible home that boasts 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms and a home theater.  My eyes were wide open taking it all in, as the gracious seller showed me around her precious creation.  My hands caressed the natural stone textures everywhere.  What a jewel of a home.  I can see why it's listed for $18,995,000.  There's more details of course, like the 1 acre lot size, the proximity to the Fairmont Kea Lani,  white sandy beaches, and more.  I would be happy to tell you all about this glorious Makena home for sale if you contact me.

A Hawaii Recipe for Friday

Have you tried seared ahi yet?  That's yellow fin tuna - caught fresh and pan seared.

I like to spice it up with something you can get here on Maui - Volcano Spice.  It's like a Cajun seasoning and it was developed right here on Maui by Kevin Carlson.  I always keep some on hand.

You really have to get fresh fish, the frozen stuff just isn't the same, especially if you like your ahi rare, the only way to go.  You can always find fresh ahi in Hawaii, and if you're lucky you'll know someone with a boat!

In this case, use a heavy pan like a cast iron skillet that really gets heated up nicely.  You can cut the fish as thick as you like, but thicker is better so the outsides get nice and blackened before the middle cooks.

• liberally season fish on both sides
• place the seasoned fish into the HOT pan
• cook for only a few minutes before turning
• cook the other side briefly
• serve while still raw in the middle
• ENJOY!

PROPERTY TAXES - The Maui County Council on Wednesday approved keeping
property tax rates at existing levels for the next year.  Even though tax
rates will stay the same, property tax collections, the county's largest
source of revenue, are expected to drop by double-digits in the coming year.
That's because property values are continuing to decline due to the weak
housing market, and slowing construction is adding fewer new homes to the
tax rolls.
