We had an alarming wake up alert this morning, from the civil defense warning system here in Hawaii. They send out text messages to everyone with a cell phone. So just after 8:00 am all cells phone go crazy with this loud buzzing and alert.... BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
Wow, we thought - turn on the TV and see what the local stations are saying. It was business as usual on most channels which led us to believe it wasn't that serious. Local stations would be broadcasting an emergency alert if something was really happening, and sure enough there was the ticker tape crawl along the bottom of some channels. So we stayed tuned and searched the Internet for clues (waste of time). I think it was CNN that interrupted their regular newsprogram to talk about the situation and they already stated it was an error. Tulsi Gabbard Tweeted that it was a false alarm, but it took over 40 minutes for the civil defense alert stating as much.

This false alarm really shook some people up, and I've heard some extreme measures were taken. Why were we so calm? We were already at home and sheltered with a good supply of food and water. Even if a missile was coming to Hawaii, we don't expect it to land on Maui. What can you do anyway?
In any event, it was a big relief to know there was no imminent danger from an air strike. Maybe this was a good thing as protocols are now being upgraded and things will change for the better. Read the press release from the Department of Defense here.
With all the North Korea drama going on, Hawaii has resurrected their air strike sirens and there's been a lot of testing of sirens and emergency drills. Just the other day NPR was telling us what to do in the event of an air strike:
- stay indoors, away from windows
- if you're driving, pull over and get inside a building
- if you're outdoors, seek cover or get inside a building
- be prepared with 14 days of food and water and emergency supplies
And how was your morning?
