With all the hoopla about the national park service marking its 100 year anniversary, it's only appropriate to post some pictures of our best known Haleakala National Park here on Maui.
It's a highlight of anyone's visit to the island, and I would encourage you all to take a drive up there since it's so easy to do. Where else on this earth can you get in your car at sea level and drive up to a 10,000 summit in about 45 minutes? On a beautiful paved road all the way no less!
If you only have a short time, you can see plenty of the jaw dropping vistas without much effort, but if you're inclined to be adventurous, a hike into the crater is an experience you will long remember. Best of all, if you ever get a chance to camp out or spend a night in one of the 3 cabins, you are in for an incredible time!
Five years ago I had the opportunity to spend a night in one of the wilderness cabins with some friends, and I'm so glad I did. There's nothing quite like it... the silence, the isolation, the amazing scenery. You will really be unplugged here because once you descend into the crater, there's no cell phone service, no communications with the "outside" world. But even though you're so isolated, you also know you're completely safe, being in the park.
It's FREE this weekend, so be sure to make a point of visiting Haleakala National Park and help to celebrate the 100th anniversary! On your way to the park you'll pass through the lovely rural community of Kula, and you can search for Kula homes for sale if you decide this is where you want to live.
The Silversword plant is endemic to Hawaii and is one of the unique plants you will see on your visit to the park. Please don't disturb them!
Thanks for reading my Maui blog...
