After spending a few days in the cloudy gloomy weather of Vancouver, it was nice to come back to Maui and see bright blue skies and puffy white clouds, and feel the sun on my skin.  It's something we take for granted here in Hawaii, and I can really appreciate it now. I remember when this Haiku Maui home first came on the market in April 2008, asking $1,295,000.  It was unfinished, as the owner had run out of money and abandoned it.  The price was totally unrealistic at the time and what a shame they didn't price it accordingly.  It might have sold by now if it was listed for $800,000 back then.

I am now back from a short family vacation and I'll be in the driver's seat again!  So stay tuned and fasten your seat belt, it's going to be a great ride.

Vancouver and Victoria are really nice places to visit, but it's COLD and WET at this time of year.  My dad was celebrating his 90th birthday though and it was worth the trip to be there and party with him and his friends.  Usually we have his birthday party on Maui and it will be good to get back to that routine again next year!

Wow, I am tired of hearing other Maui Realtors spouting off about how you don't need a building permit to build a 200 sf shed on Maui.  That is such bad information that they keep repeating in front of my clients, and I have to butt in with these qualifiers:

  • it's for storage buildings only, on AG zoned land
  • there can be no plumbing or wiring involved, or you will need permits 
  • you can't live in it!  Even if everyone is doing it, you can't legally live in it.

My Haiku Maui HI garden update for January 2012

What are we eating from our Haiku Maui garden this month?

After a very wet couple of months in November and December we are now having to water the garden every day!  There's plenty of new starts going in and more beans sprouting up.  It's a fair amount of work, and there's always weeding to be done, but we really enjoy the results.  

Here are the veggies we can just pick from the garden this month:

  • cherry tomatoes
  • bell peppers
  • swiss chard
  • eggplant
  • cauliflower
  • carrots
  • green beans
  • bok choy
  • celery
  • onions and leeks
  • baby mixed salad greens
  • cilantro, dill, basil, rosemary, parsley

Kula Ridge has won approval from the Land Use Commission, after a 6 year struggle.  The project plans to have 70 affordable housing units and 46 market valued homes on 51 acres, and is expected to take 10 years.  The community has mixed feelings about this development in a mostly rural and agricultural setting, but many residents welcome the opportunity for jobs and housing in their neighborhood.

I finally got a chance to try the fish tacos which I have heard about at the Island Taco stand in Haiku.  The new owners Ron and Cici have really made it look nice and there's tables to sit and eat your taco if you're not in a hurry to get to the beach.  They are in the parking lot of the Haiku Marketplace in downtown Haiku Maui, where Haiku Road meets Kokomo Road.

Awesome fish taco from Island Taco at the Haiku Marketplace, Haiku Maui HI 96798

It's wonderful that there are so many good choices for lunch or dinner nowadays in Haiku Maui.  The Island Taco stand is open Tuesday - Saturday, from 11-4, and stays open until 7 on Wednesdays.  You can also find them in Makawao for the Third Friday Celebration each month (on the night of the third Friday!), where they set up on Baldwin Ave right in the heart of town.

Bring your appetite and try one or two of the tacos... fish, chicken or pork, with all the good fixings.

In the past year there have been 4 sales of Maui Sunset condos in the Maui MLS, ranging from $297,000 - $447,000.

  • median price $377,500  

None of the recent sales were bank owned properties or short sales.  All were purchased with cash.

A Kihei woman has managed to save 4 monkeypod trees from being removed because they are causing a sidewalk to buckle.  It's only a temporary stay of execution, but a big relief to those who want to see the trees survive.  Future road work will probably require their removal from in front of the Maui Schooner Resort anyway.  Read more about this in the Maui News online.
