Is anyone else using Paragon as their MLS system? I hear that some markets have integrated Top Producer into Paragon, for the benefit of contact management. How's that working out? Our MLS is thinking about this option and would like some feedback. All comments will be appreciated.
What's up with the rhino pic? Just threw that in to keep it interesting.
Maybe it symbolizes that we should not be too hidebound, and should be willing to accept some changes that come our way. lol

Just a quick blog to remind everyone to CHECK YOUR OWN LINKS from your website. I would also recommend doing it from another computer than your own, as sometimes there can be an issue that only comes up from other computers (your computer recognizes when it's you that's online and will be more accommodating).
Today I was adding a BLOG, and being thorough, I clicked on all the links once it was up, just to be sure. Wouldn't you know it, I found a link that wasn't working, on MY SITE! What's going on? I delved into the mystery only to find that there were indeed a series of dead links from one of my sites. This had happened before, and I had a pretty good idea of what was going on. We have a feature called WEBSEARCH which allows consumers to search the Maui MLS, see New Listings, etc. It's a great feature, but sometimes it can be abused. If another website tries to use the information to put the search option on their own site, it will "shut down" the feature, thereby causing a dead link on MY site. Was I upset? YES. Apparently somebody with a Lake Tahoe website had wanted to link to a Maui condo that his friend was selling, via my links. Thanks for contacting me and asking my permission!
Since this was not the first time, I knew exactly who to contact to remedy the situation. All is well now. But I want to remind you all to be alert and check your own links from time to time, so your website won't experience these difficulties. Dead links can be a death sentence for a website, so pay attention. Dead links will mess up your SEO.
Thanks for listening to my rant! And thanks to Imagechef.com for the graphic.

This cute little roadside fruit stand on the Hana Highway in Huelo is staffed with WWOOFers. They have come to Hawaii to learn about growing fruits, preparing and serving them to visitors who are driving along the scenic Hana Highway. Our young farmer friend is happy to have these traveling helpers who are able to take care of themselves while they stay on his property, and trade their labors for a place to call home for a few months.
What's a WWOOFer?
Some of our Huelo Maui friends have been bragging about their WWOOFers. We are dying to try a WWOOFer ourselves. It's a network of mostly young people who want to travel and experience a down to earth "working vacation".
History of WOOF
The WWOOF program started in the United Kingdom in 1971, by Sue Coppard, a London secretary, under the name 'Working Weekends on Organic Farms'. It was to provide people living in London with a chance to participate in the organic farming movement going on in the countryside. Since the establishment of WWOOF in the U.K., the program has expanded to ‘World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms', and is now in over 28 countries worldwide, with a wide range of farm stay opportunities. WWOOF programs operate independently in each country.
World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, USA
This is an organization that is dedicated to connecting willing workers and organic farmers across the world, to promote an educational exchange and build a global community of conscious ecological farming practices. It's a project of the non profit Ecological Farming Association.

WWOOF-USAwas inspired by, and cooperates with other similar WWOOF programs worldwide, including:
How Does it Work?
One half day of volunteer help is traded for food and accommodations, with no money exchange. WWOOF provides a directory of organic farms, communities and garden projects to volunteers interested in gaining hands on experience about organic food and farming. The prospective workers will contact the hosts and negotiate the terms and work expectations. The hosts can decide who they want to have come and help on their farms. A typical stay can be anywhere from 3 days to 3 months. The host is able to ask the worker to leave at any time if things aren't working out. Most of the time it's a win/win situation as life is what you make of it.
We've joined the organization and we're looking forward to being contacted by some hard working young "farmers" from different places. We have plenty of opportunities here on our Haiku Maui farm, for a motivated person with some skills. This could be interesting, and I will keep you posted on the adventure. There will be plenty to learn for all of us. If anybody else has some WOOFer stories, I'd love to hear them!

Do You WOOF? You too can Join Online or check them out at WOOFUSA.ORG and in THE UNITED KINGDOM
Don't be CHICKEN - we'll cross this road together.
Aloha - The Hunter - Georgina M. Hunter R(S)

I like to sign up for email alerts about the weather, such as flooding or high surf. These can be very helpful when you live on an island, especially if you live near the coast. This week there have been a number of high surf advisories. Here's one that came this morning:
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has continued the HIGH SURF

Surf along west facing shores exposed to the northwest swell will be 10 to 12 feet with locally
higher sets today.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: BEACH GOERS ARE URGED TO STAY OUT OF THE
WATER AND WELL AWAY FROM THE SHORE BREAK DUE TO THE HAZARDOUS WAVE
ACTION AND STRONG RIP CURRENTS.
The NOAA Weather Broadcasts can be reached by calling the following numbers: for Maui 871-6706, for Moloka'i 552-2477, and for Lana'i 565-6033. The NOAA Weather Internet services can

This is a photo from Jaws, on the north shore of Maui. It's a famous surf break that really getting rocking with the big wave season in the winter months. Those are windsurfers on the face of that wave! A high surf advisory is a call to action for these people. Only experienced water sports enthusiasts should even try going out in these conditions.
Above is a picture of a "small" wave at Makena Beach, which is actually on the south shore, but I think it's a nice shot anyway.
Be careful in the water here on Maui, it can be very dangerous!

Random MAUI Scenes taken from the car while driving
Okay I admit it's a dramatic title, but this is just a quick post with some drive-by pictures of some Maui scenes. I always hate to take pics out the car window, but sometimes you get lucky and they're not too bad. That's a view of the ocean close to Mama's Fish House.
Makawao Town in upcountry Maui has some great old buildings. And of course, there's always those beautiful rainbows over the sugar cane fields while driving into Paia on the north shore.

Don't worry, I wasn't driving. Have a great Thanksgiving! I hope you have a sunny day.

Hey you addicts, listen to this, you can justify the time you spend here on ActiveRain!

Did you read the November National Geographic magazine? The story about MEMORY, and how brains work? Fernando Nottebohm is a leading scientist who discovered that canaries generate new neurons to replace lost brain cells. One of the ways they do this is by meeting new social partners. Other researchers have confirmed that humans can also make new brain neural connections. Well you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that social networking will help to increase your brain cells. So blog away!

Scientific tests have proven the connection between new social contacts and the increase in brain cells! As we click on members names and read their profiles, see their pictures, and make connections, our brains are also "making connections" in order to store all that new information. Therefore, continue to exercise and stretch your brains.

Does anybody have those magnetic signs on their car? Are you using this marketing opportunity? Our broker strongly recommends that his agents use these signs as a way of standing out above the crowd. It's a low cost investment in your business, and it just might bring big rewards.
I have found my signs to be helpful when I'm cruising to a showing on Maui, and meeting another agent for the first time. As soon as they see my car, they know who I am and don't have to ask. Likewise with meeting a client for the first time. We often "meet" clients on-line, and then arrange a real meeting at a listed condo or home for sale. It's great to be instantly recognizable, and make it easy for the client to find you.
In the upscale Wailea neighborhood, an agent is not allowed to put signs in the ground, which makes signage for an open house kind of challenging. With the car signs, you can have some OPEN HOUSE signs on your car to encourage walk-in traffic.
Here on Maui you can get signs made at a number of locations, and they can be ready in a few days.
Some other reasons to use the car signs:
See you around!

I love to do my part and recycle things, and find it easy to do. I can never understand why some people just throw all that "good stuff" away.
Where is AWAY? Here on an island, AWAY is not that far away, and space is limited. In the 27 years since we've been living here, we have seen major changes in the landfill situation. There used to be at least 3 county landfills back then, and now there is only 1 for the whole island! It's incredible how much garbage goes in there each day. In fact it's scary. What will we do when there's no more place to keep putting all this unwanted stuff? We are such a consumer driven society that we need a whole change of lifestyle in order to stop this runaway train.
Recycling is still pretty new here in Hawaii, compared to the rest of the world, like Europe. We don't have curbside recycling yet on Maui, as our population base is still pretty small, and it's an evolving concept. But there are rules are in place to encourage businesses to recycle, such as the mandatory glass recycling for bars and restaurants. We can turn in used motor oil, which is a big blessing, up to 2 gallons at a time, at various outlets. I'm looking forward to a future where recycling is the norm and children are taught to do their part, and everyone benefits.
How are they handling these issues in your neighborhood?

The state of Hawaii has recently implemented a beverage deposit and redemption program to encourage consumers to take their empty cans and bottles back for a nickel each. Every year, approximately 800 million beverage containers are sold in the state. The majority of these containers end up discarded in the waste stream, or as litter in our community. The deposit is a great way to reduce the amount of containers going to the landfill every day. The consumer pays 6 cents at the register, and they will receive back 5 cents when they redeem their empties. It's a good deal for the state, as there is still a pretty high percentage of containers that are never redeemed. According to their website, the program is a success, with a return rate somewhere in the 70% range. The bad news is there are only so many places to take your recyclables, but we're still learning over here.
In Haiku Maui, there is a recycling and redemption center right on the Hana Highway, next to the Haiku Community Center and Haiku Elementary School. The convenient location makes it easy for so many people to do their good deed on their way to and from work, school, or whatever. Every day you can take back your cardboard, plastic bags, newspaper, and non redeemable glass jars and bottles. To redeem items, you need to come by Wednesday through Sunday, and the helpful people there will count your items, or weigh them and pay you cash. Today the place was very busy, but I didn't have to wait long to be helped. Besides the $13.00 I made, I can feel good about helping the environment, and saving a lot of space at the Maui County Landfill. For a list of other REDEMPTION SITES, you can check out the MAUI COUNTY RECYCLING website.

REALTORS WITH HEART was our tag-line for a recent training session available to Maui Realtors. Marilyn Griffin R(B) was the agent/ER nurse who came up with the great idea to enable more Maui real estate agents to be prepared to REALLY assist their clients in a time of need. As an emergency room nurse she knows the situation here on Maui can be pretty grim if you're not close to medical services. So many Maui properties for sale are off the beaten path and far from a large town, and qualified personnel might be far away. Many of our clients are seniors. A CPR trained Realtor could save a client's life if the need arose.
Chris Gilbert was the Emergency Medical Tech who taught the class to about 20 of us. In addition to the CPR training, we also got a quickie first aid class which was a real eye opener. This guy was a superb instructor and kept the pace brisk and the content interesting with his own anecdotes. We learned that those first few minutes of response can make it or break it for a victim of a stroke or heart attack. It is SO important to keep that person breathing!
We had the "dummies" to practice on, baby, child and adult versions. This was great hands-on training, and not as easy as it looks. Apparently it's good to hear the person's ribcage "crack" when you compress it, as a good sign that you're doing it right. For a small person like myself, you really have to put your weight into it when administering CPR to a large adult male. This is not the time to be timid! The instructor stressed that you WILL NOT hurt or endanger that person by pressing too hard. This is physical work and it will be difficult to keep up the pace, but DON"T STOP until the EMTs get there. If there are others available, take turns doing the compressions, for about 2 minutes each.
How to recognize a Heart Attack:
What do you do when you find yourself in a one of these situations that needs immediate attention?
If it's an infant or small child, don't waste any time making that 911 call. Get them breathing, and start compressions first. After a few minutes make the call if nobody else is around to do it.
We also got a lesson about using defibrillators, which was surprisingly simple. I had never even seen a ventricular difibrillator before, so I'm glad to know how easy and foolproof they are to use... just peel and stick 2 patches to the torso, and push the start button! It will "warm up" and talk to you, to prompt you when to apply the jolt. The machines have easy to follow directions on them, and are battery powered. It you own one, be sure to check the batteries often. What's interesting is that the jolt of electricity doesn't start the heart beating, but actually stops it. Therefore a heart that is beating in an irregular manner will be stopped and should start again of it's own accord. Again, he stressed you can't harm anyone by using this, so don't hesitate to render aid if you can. Now that these tools are so readily available, many lives have been saved. Police are usually the first on the scene, and all police cars on Maui are now equipped with defibrillators.
Anyway, the point of this BLOG was to encourage other Realtors to get CPR certified ASAP. Contact your local American Red Cross for locations and info about CPR training in your area. We might find ourselves in a life and death situation where we can be of invaluable service to our clients. Isn't it all about the service?

HOLIDAY SEASON ON MAUI - HERE COME THE VISITORS
My 85 year old father, we call him Pa, is coming for the holidays, and he's staying for 4 months this time. Yikes - we're picking him up tonight! This is how we balance all of our lives during the holiday season:

I need to keep balanced - As the chief cook and bottle washer, I'm going to need some extra time preparing meals, so I will be sure to assign some responsibilities to Pa. Last year he was in charge of recyclables, and he can do that again. With the extra mouths around, the bottles tend to pile up faster, and someone needs to take out the bottles and cans and cardboard on a daily basis. I know he likes to do this, since he does it at his home, in a very organized matter. Out the door and into their respective garbage cans, or storage shed. One less thing for me to do, and one more way for him to feel helpful. I like that balance.

My husband needs to keep balanced - He is burdened with all the maintenance of a couple of properties, with multiple buildings, as well as livestock, and working for neighbors. He's the repair man, the lawn man, the painter (wait a minute, I thought that was my job), the plumber, the electrician, the builder, the hauler, the guy with the tractor, the "honey-do" guy. If he could clone himself we'd all be way ahead. He will have some projects for my dad to help with, to ease his own load. Pa really likes to be "hands-on" and he's pretty meticulous (for an old guy). He used to work with his hands, as a surgeon, and enjoys doing some carpentry or painting. This year we'll again get him to assemble and paint some sections of deck railings and pickets, and maybe we'll get this house completed before next Christmas rolls around.

Pa needs to keep balanced - Literally. Like he says, he notices that he's getting a little more wobbly. I can't imagine why! Last year he decided it was about time to start using the golf cart when he plays with his younger golf buddies that's he's made over here. Not because he's getting lazy, but because it won't slow them down so much. He's being considerate of their time, and finding the right balance.
In fact, by learning to live in 2 places, Maui and Vancouver, he has to make some adjustments. This is the longest stretch of time for him to be on Maui, and that will require some balance. My sister in law is house sitting for him "back home". That's a nice balance.

My sister needs to keep balanced - She lives not too far away in Haiku, but in a small house without a lot of spare room. Pa will take turns staying with us and staying with her, so nobody is "hogging" him, you know. That way he gets the best of both worlds, the quiet country life and the busier town life. She and I usually work out a switch off day that coincides with his golfing dates. One of us will take him to golf and the other will pick him up, twice a week! So far that's a good balance for her and me.
As part of our Holiday Balance, we'll all get together for holiday meals and the occasional day at the beach. Pa's birthday is in January and we like to make a party for him. Hey, how many more can there be? One year we all got together at the Maui Country Club for a nice lunch. Last year it was a barbecue party at our house. Not sure what it will be this year, but whatever happens, we will have all his friends and ours come together to celebrate this special person, my father, who has managed to balance his time and his life with those around him.
I hope you can all find some balance in your lives during this busy time. ALOHA

I got an email from my cousin in England, with this poem attached. I don't know who the author is, or I would certainly mention that. Maybe someone here will recognize it and let me know. It was quite touching, so just wanted to share with everyone on this Memorial Day. Aloha!
He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.
You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.
He walks the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.
You complain about how hot it is.
He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.
You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.
He doesn't get to eat today.
Your wife makes your bed and washes your clothes.
He wears the same things for weeks, but makes sure his weapons are clean.
You go to the shops and get your hair done.
He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today.
You're angry because your boss wants you to work half an hour extra
He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months.
You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.
He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.
You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday.
He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.
You roll your eyes as a baby cries.
He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll ever meet.
You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything.
He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting.
You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of men like him.
He hears the gunfire, bombs and screams of the wounded.
You see only what the media wants you to see.
He sees the broken bodies lying around him.
You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.
He does exactly what he is told.
You stay at home and watch TV.
He takes whatever time he is given to call, write home, sleep and eat.
You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.
He crawls under a tank for shade and a 5 minute nap, only to be woken by gunfire. You sit there and judge him, saying the world is probably a worse place. So take a minute today and think of him and all the things he cannot do that we take for granted

Peahi Farms on Maui gets an upgrade. Paving crews have been busy making miles of smooth black roads into this new planned community subdivision at Opana Point on Maui's north shore. During the months of October and November the blacktop has gone down and the entrance to the Hana Highway is almost complete. Road work is a major improvement for this north shore Agricultural oceanfront subdivision. Sales will surely be moving smoothly now with easy access to the string of cliff front vacant parcels.
Buyers of this prime oceanfront location should be aware of any issues that pertain to Special Management Areas(SMA's), and Shoreline Areas in Hawaii. Contact your favorite Maui real estate agent for more information and updates.
This ambitious project has been a long time in the making, and is finally reaching completion, with the first property closing escrow last month, for $2,100,000. More upgrades are on the way, and this promises to be a well planned Haiku Maui neighborhood. Final subdivision approval was granted December 14, 2006. Land court approval granted on September 12, 2007. Currently there are 14 MLS listings of vacant land for sale at Peahi Farms, priced between $1,300,000 to $2,995,000
