This is the Hui No'eau, or "the Hui" as it's known to the local community. When you approach from the long driveway off Baldwin Avenue, this is the first building you come to - it's the former home of this Kaluanui estate. Now it offers space for classes, lectures, exhibits, studios, a gift shop and administrative offices. Future expansion will provide adequate classrooms and new studios for a growing community
Yesterday I blogged about the annual Holiday Fair which was held on Dec. 1st this year. It has become a tradition on Maui to attend the craft sale for some unique gifts that are made on Maui.
During the rest of the year, classes are offered in drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, jewelry, glass and ceramics. Novices, serious students and professional artists gather to share their talents in workshops of varying lengths and formats. After completing prerequisite courses, artists can get creativie in many quaint studio spaces located throughout the estate in uniquely renovated buildings.
There's a lot of history to this 69-year-old organization , including the most recent chapter that had members rallying to save the art center from being bought out by investors in 2005. A Strategic Planning Committee was formed in February 2007 to engage in fact-finding and analysis. The new vision for the future transforms the Hui into a vibrant force not only in the cultural life of Maui but also the world.
The spacious 1917 plantation mansion and estate was designed by noted architect C.W. Dickey for Harry and Ethel Baldwin. Ethel Baldwin, founded the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Society in 1934. The remains of one of Maui's earliest sugar mills are located at the entrance to the ten acre estate near Makawao town.
In the gift shop, the featured artists and pieces change every three months. Some of the featured artists are: Jennifer Owen, Lori Koprowski, Adam Field, Suchi Waters Benjamen, Chris Cowan, Kathy Sakai, Claudia Coonen, JB Rea, Tom Calhoun, Lisa Shaw and Macario Hernandez.
