Weather Report from Maui HAWAII - Mostly Perfect with a Slight Chance of Imperfection

Maui Weather Report - Still Sunny

I had to laugh at my nephew yesterday when he gave the Maui weather report as - "mostly perfect with a slight chance of imperfection."  He's out here visiting for his gazillionth time, and was commenting to our other visitors who are here for their first time.  And you know, the funny thing is, he's right!

The weather on Maui can be boring at times.... mostly sunny with a chance of scattered showers in the mauka areas.  North-east tradewinds in the 10-15 mile per hour range, highs in the low to mid 80's .... day after day after day!  Yikes!  It's always a good day to go to the beach... either north shore or south shore, or west side.

All year long the conditions are ideal for surfing and windsurfing, with small to medium sized waves rolling in somewhere on the island.  In the winter months we get the really big surf, especially on the north shore.

You won't find that here - what we DON'T have in Maui, Hawaii.

a beautful ocean and mountain scene taken along the hana highway on the north shore of maui hawaii

WE DON'T HAVE THAT HERE

Just in case you're wondering about Maui life, but you've never been to Hawaii, here's some local info.  Let me tell you some of the things we DON'T have over here on the island of Maui:

NO Billboards - Maui County has an ordinance prohibiting billboards and large signs.

NO Snakes- We actually have 1 species of underground blind snake, but that doesn't count.  No poisonous snakes, no skunks, no raccoons, no foxes, no coyotes, no wolves, no bears, no cougars, no seagulls.  We do have mongoose, deer, wild and feral pigs.  You can go hiking in the jungle and not fear for you life.

NO Rabies - Good news for pet owners.  You can more easily transport your pets here from other countries without rabies, like New Zealand, with no quarantine needed.

NO 6-Lane Highways - I don't think we even have an underpass/overpass yet, but there might be one under construction as I speak.

NO Strip Clubs - We do have Hostess Bars in Wailuku though.  And I think they're opening a Hooters in Lahaina.. does that count?  Now if you want so see scantily clad hot young things, just go to the beaches on the north shore - it's like going to the set of Baywatch... haha.  And if you want to see naked people on the beach... you can call your favorite Realtor to see which beach that would be.

NO Gambling - No racetracks, no BINGO, no lottery, no casinos.  We do have illegal cock fights though, if you know where to find them.

NO Trailer Parks - That's right - no trailer parks.

NO Military/Naval Bases- Oahu has numerous military and naval bases and personnel.

NO Snow and Ice- OK there's plenty of ice in the tropical drinks, and we do get snow on the top of Maui occasionally.

YES we DO have plenty of: good weather; beaches; shopping and entertainment; arts and culture; friendly people, and a lot of ALOHA.

If you're thinking of moving to Maui, let an experienced local Realtor help you with your relocation package.  Contact me and tell me about your needs, I'm listening and I care.

Arriving on Maui - Kahului Airport OGG - Kahului HI 96732

the airport and runway at Kahului Maui HI

the baggage claim area of the Kahlui airport on maui

THE KAHULUI MAUI AIRPORT - OGG

KAHULUI GOOGLE MAP

What can travelers expect when they arrive on Maui?  Here's a brief description of the Maui airport located in the town of Kahului.

Kahului Airport is relatively small, and it's located right on the northeast side of town, by the ocean.  It was once a single building with a tree growing up in the middle of the baggage claim area.  That tree has been cut down, and the airport greatly expanded, but it still retains a friendly character, with a huge central skylight next to the 5 baggage carousels.  All the gates funnel into the baggage area.

Kahului Maui airport - Starbucks comes to town

Our latest addition to mainstream homogeneity is the Starbucks Coffee shop right there by the baggage, where it used to be a dusty corner.  You might laugh, but this is HUGE for Kahului Airport.  Before Starbucks there was just a hot dog cart.

baggage carousel at OGG - Kahului Maui HI

Newcomers here are called MALAHINI.  We met some arriving Canadian visitors today and I forgot to bring leis!  We usually like to lei our first time visitors, but this time we spaced it out.  K-Mart and Costco are close by and we could have picked up nice fresh flower leis on the way to the airport, if we had remembered.  For those lucky visitors who come in a group, they might even get greeted by a pretty smiling woman with an armful of leis.  Poor Steve, he had on so many layers of clothing, the first thing he did when he got his bag was to go into the men's room and change into some shorts... can you believe he wore his long underwear on the flight!  It was about 80 degrees, which is kind of cool for Kahului.

Once you get your bags just step out to the curb if you're getting picked up, or cross the street to your car.  The parking lot is right there across the road from the baggage claim.   If you're renting a car you can hop onto one of the rental company vans and go to your car lot a few blocks away.  In case you don't already have a reservation, some car companies have their desks out on the curb, walk over and see what's available... Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz and National.

LEAVING THE AIRPORT - At the first traffic light you can go left to Costco, straight or right.  Going straight will put you on Dairy Rd, one of the busier streets in Kahului, and the main road going to the south shore, Maalaea Bay, and the west side, basically all the resort areas.  Taking the right lane will bring you into Kahului and Wailuku towns, along Ka'ahumanu Avenue.

At the second traffic light you can turn left and head east on the Hana Highway (36) towards Paia and Haiku and eventually Hana.  You can stay on Dairy Road (380), passing the Harley Davidson Shop, Home Depot and Lowes on your way to the south or west side, or turn right on the Hana Highway to get to the Maui Mall and Wailuku.

You're now ready to start enjoying your vacation.  It won't be long and you'll fall in love with Maui and wonder how you can manage to move to Maui.  Believe me, I know... been there done that.  When that time comes, please give me a call and together we can decide your plan of action.

Shopping for a Vacation Condo in Maui, Hawaii - what to look for

maui hawaii vacation condos in kihei maui

WHAT'S A VACATION CONDO?      KIHEI and WAILEA GOOGLE MAP

In Maui County Hawaii, zoning allows for short term rentals which are defined as anything less than 180 days.  In Kihei and Wailea this has created some exquisite hotels and resorts, and many great beachfront condo buildings which are suitable for short stays.  Many owners use their vacation condos for just a few weeks a year, and rent them out the rest of the time.  The south shore of Maui is famous for the sunshine, sandy beaches and warm climate, which really appeal to mainlanders and second home buyers.  For a truly enjoyable experience, there are many things to consider when shopping for a vacation condo to rent or buy on Maui.  Some things to think about before coming:

  • structure type
  • location
  • amenities
  • parking stalls
  • pets
  • maintenance fees
  • house rules
  • management
  • price

view from Polo Beach Club resort Wailea maui HI

Structure Type - Most south Maui condos are 8 stories or less.  Polo Beach Resort is a prime example of a beachfront high-rise in Wailea.  A penthouse on the 8th floor will have breathtaking views up and down the coast looking over the tops of the coconut palms.  You can expect to pay well over $3M for one of these babies.  Many other high-rises are 6 floors and these tend to be the higher density buildings.  Smaller more intimate 2 story buildings can be very friendly, where you get to meet all your neighbors.

Location - All along South Kihei Road, and south from there, you'll find dozens of vacation condo buildings.  Beachfront will be the most expensive, and there are plenty of those to chose from.  The beaches in north Kihei are quite different from the south Kihei beaches, and it pays to know which you prefer.  Much of the shoreline is rocky, without sand, and these are also prime locations.  Across the street from the ocean ranks as the next best thing to oceanfront.  Do you like to walk to shops and restaurants and movies, or would you rather be more secluded?  Some folks like a fairway view and many complexes are designed to take advantage of a lush golf course to enhance the views and open space feeing.  Are you a golfer.. does this ring your bell?  For the budget minded, smaller complexes that are off the beaten path can still be favorable in a nice quiet location.

pool at the koa resort in kihei maui hawaii

Amenities - A swimming pool and spa are standard issue in most Maui condo buildings, and some have 2 or 3 pools.  Some will also have tennis courts, putting greens, lush grounds with water features, even herb gardens.   There's almost always going to be a barbecue area, and the best places will have an entertainment pavilion to go with this, for having your own poolside parties.  Some even have roof top decks!  Imagine the views from up top!  Is an elevator important to you?  Not all buildings have them.  What about furnishings... do you want fabulous or funky?

Parking - Parking stalls can be assigned or open.  Parking can be side by side or tandem, which is not the most desirable option.  Some units come with 1 spot, some come with 2 - it's all different.  Once in a while you can get 3 parking spots.  Do you need to leave your car behind when you're not here - which places will allow that?  Do any buildings have covered parking?  These are the kind of questions a good agent can help you with.

Pets - Believe it or not some vacation condos allow pets.  Some people choose to reside in their vacation condos year round, and they want to have a pet or two, so what's wrong with that?  Cats, dogs, birds, or fish - different rules apply in each resort.  If you're moving here and would like to know which buildings are pet friendly, ask your Realtor.

Maintenance Fees - As a renter this is not an issue, but as an owner, it can make or break your monthly nut.  Why are some buildings so high?  What's included with that monthly fee?  Who pays for the insurance?  Each case is different, but usually the monthly maintenance fee is based on the square footage, so expect to pay more for the larger units.  Pools and landscaping add to the cost, so those places with beautiful grounds and huge pools will generally have to pony up a little more each month.

palms at wailea - vacation condos in wailea maui hawaii

House Rules - This is important when buying a condo.  During the transaction you will be given a set of the Condominium Declarations, and other documents pertaining to what you can and can't do with your unit.  It's important to read this thoroughly before deciding whether or not to go forward with your purchase.  You will be allowed time to review the documents and if you decide you can't abide by the rules, you will be able to cancel with proper notice to all parties.  Again, your buyer's agent will guide you through this.

Management - With so many vacation condos on Maui, you know there must be plenty of companies that do property management.  We have some big name players who do a great job of maintaining your investment, and keeping it booked...like Destination Resorts.  Fees will vary depending on the level of service, so be sure to inquire with a few before you make your final decision.  You'll want to work with a company who responds to your requests for more information.

Price -  It's no secret that Maui prices are "up there".  But you know what they say... "Why is Maui real estate so expensive?.... Because it's worth it!"  One of those studio vacation condos will start at about $200,000.  Pictured here is The Palms at Wailea, a very popular destination where you can still find furnished 2-bedroom condos under $1M.  At the top end, the sky is the limit, and you know what... there are plenty of oceanfront multi-million dollar condos pending right now.  So if you're ready to buy, I'm ready to help you find what you're looking for.  You'll need someone with the experience and knowledge to sort through all the great choices available.  Call me today.

Who needs help remembering things?

dog in the bird bath

Who needs help ... we all do.

I recently heard a motivational CD by Ron White, about enhancing your memory.  It was GREAT!  He explains a really good method which he calls making a mental filing cabinet to help you remember a list of words or thoughts.  It really works.  The funny thing is to makes things "stick" in your memory, you need to create an image that creates an emotional impact, so you can bring up this image again.... emotional glue, so to speak.  I'm not going to even try to tell you the whole method, you can listen to the CD, or read a book that will do that.

Anyway, we can all benefit from a memory boost, right?  Wouldn't you like to always remember someone's name?  How about your grocery list?  If you think you would like to improve your memory and increase your sales potential, it's pretty simple once you know how.

So in additon to growing more brain cells by social networking, how about jump starting your memory functions!  A little self improvement can go a long way.

Wailea fire station in Wailea Maui Hawaii

WAILEA IS ON FIRE!

Just a quick post today to insert a picture of the Wailea Fire Station.  Now we all know that Wailea is really just a private planned community in Kihei, Maui - but it's trying really hard to be its own town.  There's plenty of very expensive real estate in Wailea, and those properties need to be protected.... hence this nice fire station located right on the edge of Wailea "town".  These guys are standing by and ready to put out fires in those multi-million dollar fairway estates and oceanfront homes.... and even some more humble abodes too.  Let's not forget all those fabulous vacation condos that need to be kept safe from fires.

The Wailea market is HOT HOT HOT right now, as always.

Got a burning desire to own a Wailea property?  Are you working exclusively with an agent?  I would like to help you find that perfect Wailea home or condo for sale, so please contact me with your questions.

It's hot on Maui beaches - just like the real estate market

And speaking of burning... don't forget to use plenty of sunscreen when you go to the beaches on Maui.  With all the great choices of beaches on the South Shore, it's too easy to get sunburnt, so please be careful.

Maui Hawaii Golf Courses - the South Shore - Kihei, Wailea and Makena

maui golf courses - Elleair in Kihei

SOUTH SHORE GOLF COURSES           KIHEI MAP

With over 15 courses in incredibly beautiful settings, Maui is a world-class golf destination..  Each year Maui hosts a number of tournaments, including:

  • the Hawaii Open
  • the Senior Skins - October
  • the Ladies Skins - January
  • the Mercedes Championship - January

Here's a list of courses in the South side resort area  - Kihei, Wailea and Makena.

ELLEAIR  1345 Piilani Hwy,  Kihei, Maui, Hawaii 96753  (808) 874-0777

Formerly Silversword Golf Course, it's located in the heart of Kihei close to the Maui High-Tech Park.  If you own a condo in the Hokulani Golf Villas, you will be looking out over these pretty fairways.

wailea blue course - wailea maui hawaii - golfing on maui

WAILEA  100 Wailea Golf Club Dr.  Wailea, Maui, Hawaii 96753  808 875-5111

This stellar golf resort offers three world-class 18-hole runs.  Close to the Wailea hotels and the Shops at Wailea, this a favorite for visitors to Maui.  Wide green fairways and large greens make for enjoyable golfing for all.  While the Gold and Blue courses offer golfers all they could want from Maui golf, it's the Emerald Course that's the star of this show.  The Emerald is a jewel of a course, with its name describing the great conditions and color of the course   It's one of North America's most women friendly courses.  Lots of short fun holes and reachable par 5's.  The Gold is the most demanding of the three courses and has lots of outstanding golf holes.  Try them all and you won't be disappointed.

If you own a Grand Champions condo or Wailea Fairway Villas unit, you could be watching them tee off from your lanai.  After a hard day of golf, get refreshed at Joe's Bar and Grill, or Mulligans on the Green Restaurant.

All Wailea courses require reservations by credit card:  800-981-5512 9am-5pm HST

MAKENA  5415 Makena Alanui,  Makena, Maui, Hawaii 96753  (808) 879-3344

The Makena Golf Club is part of the Makena Resort/Prince Hotel on Maui's south shore and they want you to have fun, on both the South Course with its ocean and mountain views, and the North - a tight, well trapped beauty on the flanks of Haleakala.  With the North and South courses, you'll not only have 36 more holes of Maui golf to experience, but you'll have the option of playing toward the sea, or up into the brilliant Maui landscape.  Both are Robert Trent Jones Jr. creations.

Makena North seems very natural with Hawaiian rock walls, gullies, and old lava flows. Unobtrusive cart paths wind through the shade of thorny kiawe trees, and the endangered Nene Geese are plentiful.  Narrow fairways, elevation changes and undulating greens provide a consistent challenge throughout. Though the area is known for a gentler wind than other areas, the wind does blow here and can be a significant factor.

The South Course, which measures 7,019 yards, is the home of the Hawaii Open and frequently hosts other tournaments.  It's an open, forgiving course with spectacular mountain and ocean views.  Topnotch practice range and putting areas too.

WINTER RATES - subject to change - please verify with the course when making a reservation.

north kihei maui beachesKIHEI BEACH PARKS ON MAUI          KIHEI GOOGLE MAP

Along the 6 mile stretch of South Kihei Road, on Maui's sunny south shore, there are a number of small and large beach parks.  Here's what you can expect to find as you drive from the north end to the south end:

Ma Poina Oe Lau Beach Park - also known as Kihei Pavilion, or Ohukai, it's located at the foot of Ohukai Street.  This beach is popular with windsurfers when the wind is blowing "kona".  It's a narrow strip of sand, with some shady kiawe trees and a concrete pavilion.

Hawaii Islands Humpback Whale Sanctuary - is jointly managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources.  The sanctuary is renovating existing facilities, building a new multi-purpose building on site and removing the existing storage sheds.  The month of February is peak humpback whale season so it's the perfect time to get outside and spot humpback whales.  Come on by and explore the Sanctuary and discover Hawaii's special marine life.  At the foot of Kaonoulu Street.

kalama beach park - kihei maui

Kalepolepo Beach Park - next to the Whale Sanctuary and across the road from The Villas at Kenolio is a small shady park.  Close to north Kihei condos like Menehune Shores, Koa Lagoon, Village by the Sea, Kihei Bay Vista, and Kihei Bay Surf.  It's easy to miss this 1.5 acre park, with parking space for only 9 cars.  There is a shower and portable potties.

Kalama Beach Park - located in mid Kihei, this 36 acre park has everything.  The beach itself is small, but the park provides excellent facilities for picnicking and family outings... tables and barbecue grills, showers and restrooms, telephones, grassy areas and spacr for volleyball, basketball, baseball, soccer and tennis.

Cove Park - next to Kalama Park and very popular with the beginner surfers.  It's just a half acre, with a small boat ramp.  There is a nice surf break right in front of the park, and you can take surfing lessons here.

Charlie Young Park - is a little harder to access, with only a few parking spots.  No public restrooms, and only 1 shower.  This is a long stretch of sandy beach though, and the park is 5 acres.

kamaole beach park 1 - kihei maui

Kamaole Beach Park I - 3 acres with a beach volleyball net, picnic tables and grills, restrooms and outdoor showers.  There's a lifeguard on duty at this sandy swimming beach.  Off street parking for 18 cars.  Located at the foot of Ke Alii Alanui, with an ABC store across the street so you can pick up supplies like sunscreen and cold drinks.

Kamaole Beach Park II - the smallest of the Kamaole parks, and no off street parking provided.  Nice sandy beach with a lifeguard station/police substation at one end.  Tables and grills.  Close to condos such as: Kihei Alii Kai, Kihei Akahi, and the oceanfront Royal Mauiian condo building.

Kamaole Beach Park III - 10 acres with lots of green space and shady picnic areas.  Plenty of tables and grills, and loads of parking.  This is a favorite spot for family get togethers and you'll often see tents set up, or bouncy castles on the weekends.  Definitely my favorite Kihei beach park.  Across the street from the popular resort condos of Kamaole Sands, Hale Kamaole, and Maui Park Shore.

Kihei Small Boat Ramp - paved access to a rocky/sandy shoreline with plenty of parking.  Hoses for cleaning off the boats, showers, telephone.  The boat ramp is protected with a jetty for safe access for boats of all sizes.  Directly across from the entrance to the Mau Kamaole vacation condos.

kamaole 2 beach park - kihei maui

South of here you'll find even more beaches, in the Wailea and Makena areas.  Bigger and better beaches!  But that's another post for another day.

If you're thinking of buying a vacation condo on Maui, there are a lot of choices.... oceanfront, beachfront, hi-rise or low-rise, old or new.  Let me help you decide which one is best for your needs.

South Kihei Road - Kihei Maui HI - 96753

SOUTH KIHEI ROAD - Kihei                     KIHEI GOOGLE MAP

Maui's friendly resort town on the south shore.

South Kihei Road looking north - north end

On Maui's south shore you'll find the resort areas of Kihei, Wailea and Makena, all rolled into one zipcode.... 96753.

Back in the early 1970's there was not much in Kihei but a few beach homes, a small shopping center (Azeka's - You might remember the famous Azeka Ribs!) with a post office and some fruit orchards.  All that changed when the planners decided to allow 6-story condo buildings for Kihei, and a major building boom ensued.

South Kihei Road was the only road then, a narrow 2 lane road that pretty much followed the coastline from Maalaea Bay south to Wailea.  Beyond that was just a dusty trail leading to Makena Beach further south.  There were no traffic signals, and the road was bumpy and filled wit pot holes.  kihei maui post office - 96753

Today South Kihei Road still follows the coast, and it's more built out.  There's traffic lights on some of the corners now. The newer Pi'ilani Highway is located inland, encompassing most of Kihei between it and the sea.  The 6 mile strip consists primarily of various styles of condo buildings and little malls, beaches and parks.

I drove along South Kihei Road yesterday and took these pictures... they are all looking north.  The first one is up near the north end of the road, where there are some '70's beachfront condo buildings such as Koa Lagoon, Village by the Sea, Menehune Shores and Waipuilani.  Most of these condos are zoned for vacation rentals, so they're very popular with visitors who like to come over every year in the winter time.

The original shopping center - Azeka Place - is what would pass for Downtown Kihei.  Here is where you'll find the Post Office, the movie theaters, many restaurants and shops, a medical center and professional offices.  The cross street is Lipoa Street

Just a little further south in the middle of Kihei is Cove Park, which has a nice little surf break, and Kalama Park, which hosts the Whale Day Celebration each year... coming up soon by the way.

Mid-Kihei has some streets with oceanfront homes and condos.  Halama Street has some expensive oceanfront single family homes that come on the market from time to time, well over $4M.  Uluniu Rd has beachfront condos and homes.

kihei dining - cafe o lei

Kihei shopping covers it all, except the big box stores.  You'll find plenty of open air markets for clothing and trinkets, and local produce including pineapples.

Churches of many kinds are located along South Kihei Rd, including St. Teresa Catholic Church. The larger hotel resorts have wedding chapels for those who want to have a romantic Maui wedding by the sea.

On the south end of South Kihei Road, you'll find all the best Kihei beach parks... Kamaole Beach Parks I, II, and III.  These parks have bathroom and shower facilities, picnic tables and barbecues, and lifeguard stands.  Golden sand and small waves make for some very fun beaches that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Wave generated energy is coming to Maui - Oceanlinx news

harnessing ocean wave energy

Wave generated energy is coming to Maui

In a news release from the Hawaiian Electric Company, Oceanlinx Limited, an Australia-based high-tech company, formally announced plans to provide electric power from Hawaii's first wave based energy project.  The proposed project aims to provide up to 2.7 megawatts from 2 or 3 floating platforms located half a mile off Pauwela Point on the north shore of Maui. The platforms measure about 65 by 100 feet and 15-25 feet high and will not likely affect the views from shore.  On board the platforms, rising and falling seas push and pull air past turbines, creating electricity which is then brought ashore through an undersea cable to a substation tied to the electrical grid.  The $20 million ocean power generator would produce enough to power about 500 homes.pauwela pineapple fields - haiku maui

This is a new thing for Maui and still needs to go through the permitting process before construction can begin.  Negotiations are still underway with Maui Electric Company, regarding distribution and rates.  If all goes well, they anticipate being ready to rock and roll within a couple of years.

Pineapples are still grown in the Pauwela area of Haiku.  This largely agricultural area will be the distribution point for the inbound electricity.

Big Waves Today - Maui North Shore - Valentine's Day 2008

maui north shore coastline views

maui coastline view looking towards Mama's Fish House on the north shore

MAUI NORTH SHORE SURF

Today they are calling for waves to reach 30 feet on the north shore of Maui.  Here are some pictures of the waves at midday, Feb 14, 2008.  They get a lot bigger than this at times.  This is the north shore of Maui - between Paia town and Ho'okipa Beach Park.  Further out to the east will bring you to the famous surf break called JAWS.  Today is not "epic" enough for Jaws, but some tow in surfers will go  went there anyway, and had tons of fun.  Maui is a playground for the hard core surfers, windsurfers, and kiteboarders.  Year round great conditions attract people from all around the world to come here and train.  World class contests are held at Ho'okipa and Kanaha beaches a number of times throughout the year.

Here's a view of the coastline looking back towards Mama's Fish House in the distance.  These little beaches are used mostly by kitesurfers.  Access is a little tricky, but they don't care.  I took all these pictures from the same little patch of ground perched out over the water.  Many other people were stopping to snap some shots.  The traffic coming into Paia today was unreal... everyone wants to see the big waves I guess.

more waves off Maui north shore coastline

I could have spent more time, waiting for the really big sets to roll in, but had some appointments.  Today was also Realtor Caravan in Haiku/Paia, with 10 great properties to see.  More on that later.

Maui will soon be home to an Oceanlinx wave project for producing electrical energy.

If you're a windsurfer, you probably already want to move to Maui.  Let me know if I can help in any way.  As a long time Maui resident, and experienced Real Estate agent, I can guide you through the process of Maui homeownership.

Pride of Aloha leaves Hawaii - Norwegian Cruise Lines pulls out another one

Pride of Aloha in Kahului Maui - cruise ship in harbor
Pride of Aloha Ships Out
Norwegian Cruise Lines have announced that they will be re-stationing the Pride of Aloha vessel to Asia this summer with Star Cruises.  The Pride of Aloha will be out of service in Hawaii effective May 11 2008.  This will leave only one ship in Hawaii making the inter-island cruise, the larger Pride of America.  Pride of America will spend one night in Maui's Kahului Harbor (shown here) on its weekly cruise.  The company has lost million$ in the past 4 years due to foreign-flagged cruise ships operating in Hawaii and driving down prices.
Some think this change will be hard on local merchants, while others see it as a good thing for the harbor and the canoe paddlers who are feeling the pressure of increased harbor traffic and improvements.

Jackson Chameleons on Maui - can you spot them?

 Jackson Chameleons on MauiJackson Chameleons

Can you see him... the Jackson?  Sure, it's easy up close, but not so easy unless you know it's there.

These cute reptiles have become established on Maui, mostly in the upcountry area between Makawao and Kula.  They like the cooler elevations and reproduce in the trees and bushes of neighborhood gardens.  This one is a male, with the horns on the front of his head.  They have the cutest little hands and feet that grip the branches while their eyes look in two different directions.  Slow moving and careful, they're really hard to see.

jackson in a Kula bush - Kula Maui HawaiiHere's the Jackson again.

Males can get to be about 12-13 inches long with tail (which is prehensile by the way).  Females are smaller and don't have the horns.  The babies are small - just a couple of inches!  The tonque is incredible... it shoots out and zaps flies in mid air!  You have to see it to believe it.

Jackson Chameleons are considered an invasive species here on Maui, as they were introduced, and are now thriving.  It can wreak havoc on the delicate ecosystem when a new species comes along and has no natural predator.  It's forbidden to transport them between islands, but they are quite popular with kids of all ages, and get carried around all over the place.
