Dining in Paia Maui HI - Paia Fish Market Restaurant

Paia Fish Market Restaurant - Paia Maui HI

Paia Fish Market Restaurant         PAIA MAP

If you're looking for a place to eat fresh fish on Maui, try the Paia Fish Market Restaurant on the corner of Hana Highway and Baldwin Ave.  call them: 808 579-8030

Seating is casual - family style large tables and benches.  You need to walk up to the counter and place your order and they call out when it's ready.... it's self serve.  This helps to keep the costs down, and you can get first class food for really reasonable prices.  My favorite is the Seafood Caesar Salad - a huge mound of Caeser Salad topped with a slab of grilled Mahi Mahi and a couple of large prawns... side of cocktail sauce and tartar sauce, slice of lemon.... for under $15.  Beer and wine available.

Also available:

  • fish and chips
  • hamburgers and mahi burgers
  • fish tacos (mmmm!)
  • pasta dishes
  • fajitas, quesadillas
  • skinny french fries

There are lots of other restaurants and places to eat in Paia.... come on by and try them all!  Have you tried the Authentic Thai Food yet?

The WWOOFer series - Part 3 - Haiku Maui WWOOFer Week 1

Previously on the WWOOFer series:

I want a WWOOFer - Where Can I Find One      What's a WWOOFer?- I got a WWOOFer!

PART 3 - We got our first WWOOFer, let's call her Karen, about 10 days ago.  I drove to Kahului Airport and picked her up.  She came from Taiwan!  We had each other's cell phone numbers and pictures.  It was perfect timing, she called me just as I was pulling up to the curb to meet her... right on time.  Her bags hadn't arrived yet so we had a little time to drive around Kahului and sister city Wailuku on a quick tour of "town"... or the "big city" around here on the of the Isle of Maui

Karen has her own little cabin down in the banana patch, by an intermittent stream on our Haiku Maui farm.  The MiniPad is a cute 2 room efficiency unit with an outdoor shower, and many people have enjoyed staying here.  The arrangements we have agreed upon will be 4 hours of farm work a day Monday thru Friday - weekends off.  In exchange, Karen has room and board.  She is independent with her own living space and meals, but we provide her with food.  In addition, because she is so well behaved, she can bring her computer by and use the wireless to check her email and BLOG (she was blogging on her first day here - on MySpace - in Chinese!)  She loves this arrangement, and we all know it's important to be connected every day!  So for a couple of hours a day she gets her internet fix too.

The work she's doing is nothing terribly strenuous... nothing I wouldn't do myself:

  • cutting small guava bushes with long handled loppers
  • gathering and piling brush, yard work
  • picking up fallen palm fronds
  • farm building maintenance
  • feeding the chickens and geese
  • some painting projects

It sure help us out.  She even helps with laundry and car cleaning!

She's a good worker and this is her first WWOOFing experience too.  If we can always be this fortunate we will be happy.

We got an email today from the WWOOF USA people... there's a couple of fake WWOOFers out here in the islands, a couple posing as WWOOFers!   They aren't doing a good job we hear.  I'm so glad we got the real thing!

When Karen's not WWOOFing, she's studying English at University.  Her English is already quite good and she's practicing while here.

mix paint on maui

FIELD TRIP - Today we had to visit our tax preparer in Wailea and brought Karen along for an afternoon off the farm.  (It's hard not treating her like a visitor and guest)  We dropped her off at the Shops of Wailea for a couple of hours.  She compared the upscale shopping mall to Scottsdale Arizona!  On the way back we took a more scenic route back along South Kihei Road, and through Wailuku so we could stop at John Deere, and  Home Depot to pick up some paint.  While waiting for the paint Karen commented that in Taiwan the paint colors come already mixed up.  She was quite impressed with the paint clerk mixing up colors on the spot... she took pictures of him... maybe she will blog about it!

So all in all, it's working out just great so far.  The Maui weather has been mostly cooperating, with only a few days of showers making it a little difficult to work outdoors.  If it rains I can get her doing cleaning inside the office, and windows.  I love it!

And Russell likes her too!

At this point I would recommend getting a WWOOFer, if you get the right one.

Zillow can be your tool - why not use it?

maui county map

I went to zillow.com today just to see if anything was new in "my towns".  It's quite amazing that it's such a blank slate still.  I'm going to use it as a tool to connect with buyers and sellers of Maui real estate.  I don't care if their zestimates are inaccurate - that's just another reason why a buyer needs an agent, and hopefully they will contact me.

Previously I have uploaded photos of my towns, because NOBODY else has.  Why not?

Here's what I did today....

In my towns there were no discussions going.  So I started some about RELOCATION PACKAGES, and put the links to my RELOCATION PACKAGES here on AR.  I also started some discussions in each town with links to my website.... why isn't anyone else doing this?  You can do it!

If consumers are going to zillow.com for local information about buying homes in your neighborhood - give them some information, and especially your contact info.  You can be the local expert.  What are you waiting for?  Take advantage of this free service.

Maui County Tax Assessments are out - How to Appeal

maui county property tax office

ASSESSMENTS
Maui County property tax assessments have been mailed out recently.  If you own property on Maui you've probably already seen yours.  Were you shocked?  I know a lot of people who were surprised at the new higher amounts.  If you think you have been overassessed, here's what you can do...

APPEALS
If you do not agree with the assessed value or tax classification on your assessment notice, you may file an appeal with the Real Property Tax Division Board of Review or the Tax Appeal Court. There is a $15.00 fee to appeal to the Board of Review. The cost for filing an appeal with the Tax Appeal Court is 5% of the amount of taxes in dispute, but not more than $100 or less than $5.00 for each case. All appeals must be filed by April 9. Even though you have an appeal pending, you must pay all taxes by the due dates or you will be charged penalty and interest.   Time is of the essence.

On the other hand, we were talking to an old farmer friend today and this is what he did.... he went right down to the tax office with a stack of paperwork and got in the face of the guys in charge there.  He had proof from decades ago that his farm was dedicated to AG and that he was truly using all his land for ag purposes, he dropped a few names, and this and that, and you know what?  They agreed with him, and right there they rolled his taxes back to $60/year (from $4,000), which is what it had been forever.  It's not easy being a farmer in Hawaii!

If you want to buy a farm on Maui, I can help with your questions.  Please contact me and we can talk.  Aloha from Maui ... THE HUNTER ... Georgina M. Hunter R(S)  808 283-0635  EMAIL ME

Upcountry Realtor Caravan on Maui, Hawaii - Makawao/Pukalani/Olinda

home for sale in Pukalani Maui Hawaii

Maui Upcountry Realtor Caravan

Here on Maui we have Realtor Caravans every week.  On Thursdays we cover the north shore and upcountry areas.  I blogged about the Haiku Caravan previously, which happens on the 2nd Thursday each month.

Fidelity National Title & Escrow of Hawaii graciously provide this valuable service for us, and coordinate the event.  We meet at Casanova's Restaurant in Makawao at 8:30 in the morning.  They give us a hand-out with the list of new upcountry properties to see, with a map on the back to help find our way to all of these new listings.

Yesterday on Makawao/Pukalani Caravan there were 13 new homes to see!  Two homes were priced under $500,000.  There were some really nice looking homes.  If I was a buyer, it would be a pleasure to be shopping for a home on Maui now - some homes are totally remodeled and looking like brand new.  I see some good values.

What's a WWOOFer?- I got a WWOOFer! (Part 2)

maui cows line up for their picture

Part 2 - I got a WWOOFER!

Remember when I posted about I WANT A WOOFER - WHERE CAN I FIND ONE?  Well here's an update.

We had only 5 inquiries since that time - and I thought they would be lining up for a chance to stay for free on a Maui farm:

  • female - 21 years old, living in Los Angeles, no experience, coming for 3 weeks (in the height of our visitor schedule).

I have to admit this one didn't strike a chord with me, so I wrote her back and kind of emphasized the negative aspects of the situation.  Never heard back from her.

  • male - 24 years old and a diligent worker, in graduate school in St. Louis, Missouri, only be able to work for 9 days, "Challenging manual labor is always a welcome change from the classroom for me...would love to spend my time there in a productive and serene environment, as far away from the resorts as possible!"

Wow this guy was saying all the right things - except that he was only coming for 9 days - again right smack dab in a bad time - no room at the inn!  Sorry, no deal.

  •  male - minimal farm experience, looking for some short term work, easy to get along with but prefer alot of solitude....  like to play guitar

I don't think so.... NEXT!

  • male - bad spelling, grammer and punctuation... bad timing.  Bad luck for him.

At this point I'm beginning to wonder if we will ever find a Willing Worker for the Organic Farm - was it all just a fantasy?  What did we do wrong - was our description in the WWOOF directory scaring them away?  And then....

  • female - 28 year old from Taiwan, "The description of work opportunity as you mentioned is so attractive to me", March 14 to April 20 if it is possible.

The timing was just right - a few days overlap with our last visitors of the season.  The "minipad" would be available.  At this point I didn't care that she had no farm experience, and came from a background of accounting and sales.  She could speak English, seemed intelligent enough, and was keen to give it a try.  A month was long enough, and wouldn't get in the way of our next vacation.  I was ready!

NEXT - Part 3: WWOOFer arrives to Maui Hawaii.  (don't you hate it when this happens?)

Maui County Hawaii - Real Estate Sales - Year to Date Statistics - Here you go!

Maui County Single Family Home Sales - Year to Date Statistics

Maui County Hawaii - Real Estate Sales - Year to Date Statistics

Our Realtors Association of Maui compiles some great statistics for SOLD listings.  Here are some helpful links:

You can see that the Central area (Wailuku and Kahului) has the most number of single family home sales usually, with many newly built subdivisions still closing on the homes that buyers signed up for years ago.  Pictured above are some homes in a newer section of Wailuku.  Median sold price was $531,621.

South (Kihei and Wailea) has the highest number of condos sales.  Right now the stats are saying that condo prices are up about 25%.  Keep in mind that these numbers are based on a relatively small set of properties... just 125 condos sold in the past 2.5 months.

Recently Olowalu is leading with 14 parcels of vacant land sales this year to date.  This is an area with a couple of large new agricultural subdivisions, on the West Maui side of the island.... average price was $1,395,000.

Dining in Paia Maui HI - Authentic Thai Food - Review

Paia Maui Hawaii dining - thai food

Authentic Thai Food in Paia Maui

As you know, my dad stayed with us this winter on Maui, for 4 months.  Before he headed back to Vancouver, he wanted to have a nice family dinner out to show his appreciation.  He noticed this sign in Paia - AUTHENTIC THAI FOOD - and went in to inquire.  Not impressed with Cheeseburgers on the menu, he spoke with the man running the place about what else they could cook.  Turns out they have a large oceanfront property, and nobody's using that back area by the beach.

My crafty old dad arranged for us to have our own private dinner party in the back - dining outdoors unders the palms.  He arranged the whole event, picked the menu and coordinated for us all to meet there at 5:30.  What a nice surprise!

fresh spring rolls in Paia Maui HI

A Wonderful Dining Experience at Paia's Garden

We were greeted with fresh spring rolls - always a winner - and the food kept on coming - green papaya salad, chicken curry, noodles, rice, beef.... yummy.  All very nicely presented.  We brought our own beer and wine and toasted the occasion.  The best part was we got to meet Nui - she's the Thai woman who did the cooking and grows all the vegetables too!  She's amazing.  She has a farm up in Kula where she grows veggies for the farmers markets and for various restaurants.  It doesn't get any fresher than this!

I can hardly wait to this again, and I'm spreading the word.

WEED & POT CLUB on Maui - Who knew?

Since I've been on a "garden and flowers" theme lately, here's another post in that vein.potting shed

While I was working on my Kula Newsletter today I came across this article in the Honolulu Advertiser, describing some of the local news for Maui.... they mentioned the WEED & POT CLUB in Kahului Maui, Hawaii.  I had no idea such a thing existed!  I guess it's thirsty work so they provide plenty of water to drink.  Here's what they had to say:

WEED & POT CLUB - Maui Nui Botanical Garden's Weed & Pot Club meets 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at 150 Kanaloa Ave. in Kahului to weed, rake, trim, transplant nursery plants, and do other beautification and maintenance work. Tools, gloves and drinking water provided; bring sunscreen, wear shoes.

If you're looking for more info about Kahului Maui I have plenty of posts on that subject, especially if you are RELOCATING TO KAHULUI.

Kahului and Wailuku are located in the Central Valley of Maui, and are the main commercial, government and business districts for the island.  This is most likely where you'll land when you arrive on Maui for your vacation.

A Jade Flower Lei - Made in Haiku Maui Hawaii

JADE FLOWER LEI

At the Haiku Ho'olaulea 2008 at the Haiku Community Center last weekend, we ran into someone making leis from JADE flowers.   These incredible looking flower garlands are a traditional Hawaiian custom.  A lei is worn around the neck.

The flowers grow in long bunches from a climbing vine that entwines through a tree branches.  These ones are growing in the Waipio area along the north shore of Maui Hawaii - in the Haiku district.

Haiku Ho'olaulea 2008 - Flower Festival and Bazaar in Haiku Maui HI - Pictures

flowers in Haiku Maui HI

Last week I mentioned this upcoming event in Haiku Maui Hawaii ... the annual Flower Festival....

Haiku Ho'olaulea 2008 - was a resounding success this past weekend.  This year the weather cooperated and it was the most beautiful sunny day you could imagine on Maui - so you know it was GREAT!  I think the past few years the rain kind of dampened spirits somewhat, but not this year.

We actually were up and at the fair just in time to catch the opening blessing, and the booths and vendors were just putting the finishing touches on their displays.  We brought our visitors, Steve and Sue with us, as they were on their way to the airport to go back home to Canada (reluctantly).

Bought some trinkets and a nice tote bag locally made, some plants, some organic jams and jellies... lilikoi butter, hot pepper jelly, mulberry jam, mango chutney.  Ate some chow fun.  Talked story with some old friends.  Watched the kids doing hula It was fun!

It was a riot of colors!  I have so many pictures, I'm going to just dump some in here and not even try to make a nice layout.  Hope you enjoy the tropical flower photos.

Would you like to attend this community event next year?  If you like, I can keep you posted of the date.  Just send me an EMAIL and we can keep in touch.

Mana Foods in Paia Maui HI - a health food store that rocks!

mana foods in paia maui hi 96779

I have been meaning to blog about this place for a long time now, and keep forgetting, so here it is...

MANA FOODS, PAIA MAUI HI

49 Baldwin Ave, Paia HI 96779   808 579-8078

Open daily from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm

Primarily a Health Food store, with local produce, fresh baked breads and pastries, salad bar, hot foods to go, deli and more.

The salad bar rocks!  You can create your own salad to go and throw in some fresh spring rolls, or vegetarian maki sushi (with the seaweed wrap).  They make pizza and soups every day, and other hot treats like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, veggie lasagna.  It's mostly vegetarian stuff in the salad bar and hot bar, but across the aisle in the deli section you can get hot and cold items that include fish, seafood, organic poultry and meat.   How does turkey meatloaf sound?  Or Thai shrimp in coconut milk?  Free range roast chicken?  Does green papaya salad float your boat?  These people have a great choice of entrees and side dishes every day.

mana foods paia - health food store on maui

For a small store, they really pack it in, and have a great selection of items.  Loads of choices.  This is one busy store.  You can make bulk orders of your favorite things, and save a little money.  Just place the order and they'll call you when it's in.  I buy my granola in bulk so I don't run out.  The prices are mostly very competitive with larger stores too, so I keep going back... the lowest prices I have found for teas and olive oils, to name a few things.

Don't let the outward appearance fool you.  There's usually some hairy looking backpackers lurking out front, hoping for a stray sandwich to fall into their laps, or chowing down on their tofu burgers.

This place is so "happening" you can often see celebrities shopping here... those who know Paia Maui is the place to unwind without being harassed by paparazzi.

locally grown produce at Mana Foods in Paia Maui HI

The produce section is unbeatable... lots of organic stuff, and especially locally grown fruits and veggies.  You'll see some strange looking things here, but it's all good.... Big Island ginger, Kula strawberries, Maui onions... yummy!

Here's a tip.. if you're cruising around Paia and you're getting too hot, step into Mana Foods and chill a while... they keep it pretty cool in here.

Mana Foods will be able to give Whole Foods a run for their money, when they come to Maui later this year.

Paia has really embraced this natural food store, and it has grown tremendously over the years.  I know people who come from all over the island just to shop here.  In fact I met a couple who want to move here from Oahu, just so they can shop at Mana Foods!

Mana Foods Paia Maui - natural food store in Hawaii

Sometimes you can even buy a bunch of fresh coconuts outside.

No plastic shopping bags here, so please bring your own tote bags, or buy one to go.

Thanks for visiting my town of Paia Maui.  Come back soon.

Steak and Lobster at Mama's Fish House - Don't you wish you were here?

STEAK AND LOBSTER at mama's fish house maui restaurant

CAN YOU TASTE IT?

And now for something completely different.  After all the serious posts I've made lately, I need a breath of fresh air... so here it is.

If you were on Maui you could be eating this delicious meal at Mama's Fish House Restaurant in Kuau.  Their website is a pleasure to peruse as you listen to Hawaiian music.

We took some clients/friends out  to Mama's for a special treat, and my hubby got the steak and lobster because he has always dreamed of it.  It was awesome!  I had the mahi-mahi stuffed with crab and lobster, encrusted with macadamia nuts.... damn it was good!  We had a nice booth with lots of privacy, as opposed to the usual table looking out over the palm fringed beach.

If you were my client, you too could be treated to an excellent night out at one of Maui's best known and loved dining establishments.  So what are you waiting for?  Call me up and let's put together a transaction and close it smoothly and efficiently.  CHEERS to Maui buyers and Maui sellers!

Maui Relocation Package - Kahului HI 96732

MOVING TO MAUI HAWAII INFO - KAHULUI - 96732

So you want to move to Kahului Maui, and you've decided you  need some help.  Let me be of assistance.... I hope these links will be just what you're looking for.  When you're ready to make the move, let a local expert be your guide.  Of course there is so much more to know before you come here to Maui, so doing your own research is essential.

Kahului was once known as "Dream City" when it was first established as an alternative to the plantation camps of old.  That era (the '50s and '60s) brought a whole lot of cinder block homes to families who had never owned a home on Maui.  Most of those homes are still around, and a lot of newer subdivisions have been created in recent years.

The Island and The Bluffs are Kahului's most prestigious gated neighborhoods, located close to Wailuku.  Maui Lani is a planned community by Schuler Homes, comprising a lot of the new offerings in the market.

Moving to Maui Hawaii - Paia Relocation Package - 96779

Relocation Package for Paia Maui HI

So you're ready to move to Paia Maui HI- Here are some good things to think about when getting started. Of course there is so much more to know before you come here to Maui, so doing your own research is essential.  Paia is a historic sugar plantation town on the north shore.  Beautiful beaches (that's Baldwin Beach Park pictured here) and a year round warm climate make this part of Maui very attractive for almost anyone.  Paia is a very "groovy and organic" kind of town, with residents from across the globe.  Spreckelsville and Kuau are a couple of other oceanfront neighborhoods in the Paia area.

Paia is only about 15 minutes from the Kahului airport, along the Hana Highway, so it's an easy commute if your job is in the central area of Kahului and Wailuku.  There are a couple of condo complexes, but most of the housing is single family.  Home prices in Paia start from the high $300,000's.  Paia also has a thriving commercial district, with restaruants, shops, gas stations, and services.  The town has an old fashioned look with mostly historical buildings which add to the charm of this small town.  See more Paia town pictures at Localism.com
