PEAHI FARMS - HAIKU MAUI HAWAII - UPDATE - PICTURES OF THE NEW IMPROVEMENTS

As I drive this new oceanfront development almost every day, I like to see what's going on.  Over the past few months there have been some nice improvements... rock walls, concrete apron and driveway, and the planting of trees.

These pictures were just snapped as I drove by, the traffic was very slow, or stopped anyway.  It's shaping up to be a really great subdivision, and they say it won't be an exclusionary gated community, so we shall see.

They still keep it closed a lot of the time, but if a buyer wants to see the lots, it can be arranged.  Give me a call if you think you could be happy owning a lot in the Peahi Farms community, and I'll get you in.

As expected, coconut palms have been planted, and grass seeded at the entry. Can you see how it's starting to shape up? See the ocean in the background? This road will wind down through the subdivision to the string of oceanfront house lots, each with 2-7 acres where you can build a house and a cottage and other farm buildings. There are still plenty of lots available. They start about $1.3M and go up from there.

Recently the rock walls were built, and the grass has filled in. How do you like it now?

Maui organic gardening...

We are so glad we started a couple of gardens this year, as the weather has been great - lots of sunshine.  We could stand a little more rain, but at least there's the hose.

We went away to the mainland for a week, and when we came back the transformation was amazing.  Even this past week has shown some incredible growth.  The key is to use lots of good organic fertilizers.  The bugs don't stand a chance when the plants grow so vigorously. 

I just had to brag about my great Haiku garden!  This picture only shows half of it... the other half is filled with more tomatoes and about 5 kinds of peppers, including lots of hot ones.  I want to start another garden so we always have something coming off.

We are already eating:

• pole beans
• cherry tomatoes
• basil, dill, cilantro, Thai basil
• 6 kinds of lettuce, and other assorted salad greens
  
• kale, mustard greens
• marigolds (yes, you can put the petals in your salad)

The lower flag is the Hawaii State flag, which was designed with the help of King Kamehameha I, in 1816, with the 8 stripes standing for the 8 main islands in Hawaii.  The Union Jack flag of Great Britain is in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii's friendship with the British, who had made this a territory before it became part of the United States.

THANK YOU to all the military men and women who have served this country, and who are now serving.  It is a pleasure to be living in this fine country.

You can help plant a tree on Maui...

A Maui couple has started a business that promotes a greener and healthier Maui environment. They created "Plant A Wish" to encourage visitors and residents to take a more active role in planting trees and helping to re-establish native forest species here on the island. Participants can buy a native tree and sponsor it to be planted, along with wishes that are buried in the soil at the time of planting.

On Earth day, April 20th, over 100 wishes were written on biodegradable paper to be planted with a young coconut tree that is being installed today in Paia. The tree planting ceremony today takes place at Baldwin Beach Park, at 2:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend, and include their own wishes for a brighter future.

The Permaculture Group and "Plant a Wish" is the project of Joseph Imhoff and Sara Tekula, who were married on Maui last year. At their wedding they planted a koa tree, and guests were invited to add their wishes at that time.  That little tree is now thriving by the way.

NEW LISTING ALERT - MAUI NEW LISTINGS

Do you still get excited when you get a new listing?  Do you want to tell everyone you know?  Do you bring it up in every conversation? 

What do you do first?  Do you email all of your contacts and SOI, your fellow agents?  How fast can you get it into the MLS?

What about pictures? Do you order the virtual tour and get pictures at different times of day?  Do you input the maximum amount of flattering pictures?  Do you print up brochures and flyers?  Will you do a mail out?

Camelback Mountain - Phoenix, Arizona

I want to say what a great experience we had climbing the trail at Echo Canyon Park - to the top of Camelback Mountain, in the heart of the Phoenix metropolis.

It was a good hike that took us over 3 hours (we rested for an hour at the top).  The guidebook told us it was going to be strenuous, and they weren't kidding.  It was hot and steep, but so worth it.  Parts of the trail were so steep that there were handrails to cling to.  Other parts you had to use your hands to climb up the rocks. 

Once you get to the top the views are incredible, and you can see 360 degrees, for miles around... all of the metropolitan area and then some.  To the south is the Sky Harbor Airport.  To the north were some really high priced homes in Paradise Valley.

Did you know there are about 187 golf courses in the greater Phoenix area?  How many of them have you played?

This is a great place for a vacation, and I highly recommend climbing the mountain if you like to get outdoors and see the vistas.

Once again, another restaurant review while on vacation in Arizona.... this place was recommended to us by our WWOOFer.  We met her here and had a good feast, in fact we were stuffed!

I usually don't get too excited about an all-you-can-eat buffet, but this place was really good, with a tremendous variety of great things to eat.  Some of the seafood items were:

• sashimi - yummy raw fish
• sushi - many kinds!
• fried salmon skin
• mussels - cooked with cheese on top
• clams - steamed in the shell
• king crab legs (these were very popular)
• salmon
• octopus - with a spicy sauce
• shrimp - more than one kind
  

If you're not in the mood for seafood, have no fear, there are plenty of other choices:

• roast duck with crispy skin
• roast beef
• chicken wings
• chicken on a stick
• beef ribs
• Korean BBQ ribs
• orange chicken
• Mongolian beef
• frog legs
• soups
• salads

I saw this display in a storefront in Old Town Scottsdale, Arizona - it's made of glass!  They just looked so real and so delicious I had to take a picture. 

I think it would be a good idea to have a box of chocolates like this on hand... then whenever you get a chocolate craving you could just bust your teeth on one of these, and get over it.

If you're in the Phoenix area, Old Town Scottsdale is a nice place to spend an afternoon.  It's loaded with art galleries and tourist shops, and plenty of places to sit and have a drink and a meal.  There's a nice pedestrian mall by the court house, where you can stroll around and enjoy the fountains and watch passers by. 

Try it, you'll like it... you never know what you'll get.

OK, so we're doing a little sightseeing in greater Phoenix and decide to go to the Scottsdale Fashion Square, just because it sound like it's so "over the top".  It is.  I check out a few of the shops like Betsy Johnson, and Jimmy Choo (we don't have these on Maui) and I think I need some medication - who can afford these clothes? 

Culture shock.  I look around.  There are more sales people in this mall than consumers.  We cruise through the 3 levels and make a few small purchases and decide it's time for some pupus.  As luck would have it, there's a Kona Grill - ah, a touch of the islands, we'll go there... and it's early enough for the happy hour specials.  The hostess point us to the upper level... we luck out and get a table just as somebody leaves.  It's the only vacant seat in the house... this place is hopping.  In fact it's nutty.  I guess this is the place to be at happy hour in Scottsdale.  We must be the oldest people in the place, it's filled with well heeled young girls, and their boyfriends.  Who are all these people?  I think they can afford to buy second homes on Maui - Wailea Maui would be a great vacation destination for the Scottsdale crowd.

KONA GRILL

I have to say the pupus were really delicious.  We had the chicken satay - 4 big skewers of chicken breast with a yummy spicy hoisin sauce and served over a bed of coleslaw, and the sweet & spicy shrimp - lightly battered shrimp tossed in a Thai garlic chili sauce.  And some Margaritas too!  All this for under $20 - that's more like it.

Listen up Scottsdale ... if you ever get tired of conspicuous consumpton, and long for a simpler lifestyle, where it's lush and green, with sandy beaches - think about owning a home or condo on Maui.

These beautiful flowers are PLUMERIA flowers from Maui.  They were growing at the Keonekai Villages condos, where I snapped them while waiting for a client to show up.  Kihei Maui is on the south shore - it's hot and sunny and sandy and dry - just exactly what these trees like.  They smell fantastic too.

The branches can be snapped off and planted into a sandy soil, and take root very easily.

Haiku Maui Hawaii - it's a great place to grow things.

We are blessed with an almost perfect climate here in Haiku - and this spring has been one of those years when we get early morning showers to keep everything green and fresh.  It was good timing for a veggie garden, so hubby got the tractor out and made me a nice spot right close to the house this time.

Let's see, what do I have growing now.... lettuce, mesclun, cilantro, basil, dill, Vietnamese coriander, lemongrass, marigolds, cosmos, pole beans, brocolli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, habanero peppers, more kinds of hot peppers, kawelo tomatoes, cucumbers, and sugar peas.  And a whole 'nother garden with just corn - which the birds are already enjoying (the sprouts)!

 It's all organic, with complehumus fertilizer, bone meal, dolomite lime, chicken manure, composted wood chips with horse manure, and green sand.

The trick is to remember to plant successive crops, every month.  Once you start harvesting and eating, it's easy to forget starting some more rows.  It takes a lot of space to have multiple garden areas.  We are lucky to have lots of space, so no excuses anymore.

There are plenty of pepper and tomato starts that I need to get in the ground now... these will produce for months.  In fact some of the pepper plants will keep going for years.  The Hawaiian chili pepper is a small red pepper that grows prolifically, and it's fiery hot.  Good for making chili-pepper water, a local seasoning.

So this is where you'll find me every morning - tending the garden before it gets too hot.
