ALOHA SHIRT MUSEUM

~ GRAND OPENING ~

PAIA MAUI HAWAII  96779

paia maui

There's a new shop in Paia - the Aloha Shirt Museum - and they specialize in vintage and collectible aloha wear and jewelry.  The new store is in a great location at the center of town, with plenty of parking around back.  Come on by and try on some shirts, on your way to the beach.

The owners hosted a fun grand opening event this evening, with lots of people dropping by for vegetarian pupus and refreshments.  Celebrities were on hand.  I got to shake hands with a couple of rock stars today.  And then I bought groceries and went home.

Building with rammed earth on Maui - a small project

rammed earth hut in Haiku Maui Hawaii

Rammed Earth Building

Our neighbors are building a rammed earth home on their Haiku Maui property and they built this little experimental project to test some techniques.  It's not finished obviously, but it's coming along.  The walls are made with mud and concrete in different ratios - that was part of the test.  The outside will be covered with a stucco like coating, also using the earth, so it will keep the natural brown color.

In this building, the walls are only 7 inches thick, but in the big house, the walls will be 16-18 inches thick.  That's a lot of rammed earth!  I guess it will be sort of like an adobe house... keeping the interior nice and cool... no need for AC.

I hope to be updating the progress on the main house... right now it's just a concrete slab.  Got questions about building with rammed earth?

These neighbors are very enthusiastic about their off grid Maui home and garden... they have a HUGE veggie garden and some chickens.  They are trying to live a self sustaining lifestyle, to be more independent.  I have to admire their determination.

Slack Key Guitar Festival at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center

Maui Arts and Cultural Center

MAUI ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTER - KAHULUI MAUI HI

The 17th Annual Slack Key Guitar Festival - June 22, 2008

One Cameron Way (off Kahului Beach Road)

This past Sunday was the annual Ki Ho'Alu (Slack Key Guitar) Festival on Maui.  Every year a number of well known and lesser known artists come together for a wonderful musical event on our sunny isle of Maui.  I can't believe this has been going on for so many years and they can still offer it to us for nothing.  THANK YOU to the sponsors.

The venue is the outdoor A&B Amphitheather which is a grassy enclosed area facing the stage.  Some bleachers and folding chairs are set up at the back, and you can bring a blanket or beach chair if you want to sit closer to the performers.  I went with a friend and we brought some chairs and got a good spot close to the front, on one side.  The weather was great - a little overcast, so we didn't get sunburnt.  The Hawaiian music was wonderful - it's so relaxing and tropical sounding.

There was plenty of other things to do while enjoying the fine Hawaiian music.  There were  some yummy food vendors, and a beer and wine tent.  Along the shaded sides of the building were tables set up for artists and crafters to sell their wares, and information booths too.  We had a wonderful meal of cajun grilled fish with mango salsa, served with salad and brown rice, made by Alexanders of Kihei.

macc

That's the beer and wine tent, nice and shady and still a good view of the stage.  I guess they want to contain the patrons in case they get rowdy!

The stage has traditionally been covered with a tent, in the event of rain.  Upcoming plans will have this tent replaced with a permanent structure of glass, in the next 18 months.  This will finalize the original vision of the entire facility which was opened in 1994.  Here on Maui we really love the MACC, which is a world class focal point for the arts and entertainment.

Next year the festival takes place on June 28th - a Sunday - so mark your calendars now!

Call the MACC for more info 808 242-2787, or check out their website.

gary halemau performs at the MACC on Maui

The show played from 2 - 7 pm.  Each artist had a turn on the stage to play and sing a few tunes.  This is Gary Haleamau and some friends perfoming his 20 minute set.  He now lives in Las Vegas with his family.

Some of the other performers:

  • Ledward Kaapana
  • George Kahumoku & Friends
  • Kevin & Ikaika Brown
  • Paul Togioka
  • Makana
  • Michael Kaawa
  • HAPA

Thanks for visiting - come back soon.  Aloha from Maui.

Slack Key Festival - Did you get a chance to attend the 17th annual Slack Key Guitar Festival at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center this Sunday?  It was a perfect day for the event... not too sunny, and a nice breeze blowing to keep things cool.  The entertainment was first class, the food was good, and the craft tables were interesting too.  The best part is that it's a FREE concert every year.

Maui Home Buying Tip - start shopping for insurance NOW

humble building in Huelo Maui

Maui Home Buyers - Congratulations on finding a home that fits your needs and budget. but please don't wait until the last week of your transaction to start shopping for your homeowner's insurance.  Start shopping as soon as you open escrow.

If you're getting a mortgage, the lender will require that you have adequate coverage.  Here in the islands, it can sometimes be challenging to find homeowner's insurance.  Some things that insurance companies might have issues with:

  • Is it an older home, with single wall construction?
  • Is the home off the grid?
  • If it's your second home, do you have a burglar alarm system?
  • Was the house built with adequate hurricane clips?
  • How far is the home from the nearest fire station?

Don't let lack of preparedness create a snag in your deal.  Be pro-active and have a smooth transaction so you can close on time.

The State of Hawaii offers help by way of the Insurance Commissioner...see what he has to say.

Do you need the names of some insurers here on Maui?  Just give me a call or email and I can help.  If you like the look of this little hut - there's a parcel of vacant land for sale next door, where you can build your own home.... still waiting for the right buyer to make an offer.

Turning water into beer - how it's done.

12,000 gallon water tank on Maui - off grid lifestyle

Water = Beer

Just want to say thanks to my hubby for helping out a neighbor...

We live off the grid on Maui, which means there are no county services in our part of Haiku.  For water, we use a catchment system where the rainwater ends up in this attractive Scafco (converted grain silo) water tank.  It holds 12,000 gallons which is way more than we need, as there's only 2 of us tapping into it.  The rain is channeled off the house's metal roof by way of rain gutters and pipes.  A pump and pressure tank deliver water back to the household system.

All our neighbors are in the same boat, either using catchment systems or drilling wells for water.  Some neighbors are newbies and don't have adequate systems in place for times when there is little rain, like right now.

A neighbor down the road has a family of 4, and his small water tank ran dry.  They were going to the beach park every day to shower and fill up some water jugs just to get by.  That's no way to live!  My husband was working to prepare the site for their new and improved water tank and offered to help.  He happened to have a 300 gallon portable tank kicking around and delivered it in the bucket of his backhoe one day.  Boy were they glad to see that!  Since then it's rained a few times and they are probably "out of the woods" by now, though still being cautious with their usage.

box of beer

So one day after that the neighbor shows up with a case of Steinlager beer.  Boy was I glad to see that!  I don't go into town every day, and we were out of beer.  I really didn't want to go anywhere, so this was good timing.

Anyway, that's how you turn water into beer... pretty simple huh?

Thanks Murray, and thanks also to the neighbor.  It's nice to have neighbors like that.

Weekend Chuckle - war vet gets a new job

post office

(another weekend joke to lighten your day - unless you happen to be offended by this JOKE - it's just a JOKE)

A guy goes to the Post Office to apply for a job.

The interviewer asks him, 'Are you allergic to anything?'

He says 'Yes - just caffeine.'

'Have you ever been in the service?'

‘Yes,' he says. 'I was in Iraq for two years.'

The interviewer says, 'That will give you 5 extra points toward employment,' and then asks, 'Are you disabled in any way?'

The guy says, 'Yes...an IED exploded near me and blew my testicles off.'

The interviewer tells the guy, 'O.K. In that case, I can hire you right now. Normal hours are from 8 AM to 4 PM. You can start tomorrow at 10:00 - and plan on starting at 10 AM, every day.'

The guy is puzzled and says, 'If the hours are from 8 AM to 4 PM, why don't you want me to be here before 10 AM?'

'This is a government job,' the interviewer says, 'For the first two hours we just stand around drinking coffee and scratching our balls. No point in you coming in for that.'

( since this is a network for the Real Estate industry, this shouldn't offend too many people here - heeheehee )

Arena Polo - Upcountry Maui Hawaii

Here's some pictures taken at the George Manoa Sr. Polo match on Father's Day, June 15th 2008.  The location was at the Manduke Baldwin Polo Field, on the slopes of Haleakala, Maui.   I'm not sure if that's Kula, Pukalani or Makawao... it's sort of at the junction of that upcountry area.  It was a beautiful sunny day as you can tell, with gorgeous views toward Maalaea Bay to the west, and Haleakala behind.  The Maui Polo Club hosted 2 games on Sunday - the first was a round robin match with 3 teams of 3 players switching off.  The second game featured a Maui team playing an Oahu team.  Afterwards, a big barbecue was laid on, compliments of Haleakala Ranch.

getting ready to start the polo match

This was the first time for me, to attend a polo match on Maui, or anywhere.  They call it cowboy polo, but it's been going on for over 100 year on this island.  This venue is the smaller field, or "arena" polo, which they play in the summer.  In the fall, after the horses have rested up, they play on the larger full sized "outdoor" field, up at the Oskie Rice Arena above Makawao.  That's when the action gets really heated up.  I'm looking forward to seeing some of that in September.action in the arena - maui polo match

Pineapple -

You all know what this is, and here it is growing in a pot.  Yes it's true, you can grow a whole new plant like this from the cut top of your fresh pineapple.  It just takes a really long time to grow.  They used to grow them commercially in many more parts of Maui than they do now.  It's kind of a declining industry, but the fresh fruit market is replacing the canned product, with great success.

Aloha and thanks for visiting my Maui blog - your comments are appreciated.

DRIVING THROUGH PAIA MAUI HAWAII

Well if video is the next big thing, I need to get with the program and start making some videos of my beautiful island... Maui.

Here's a crude example of what a Realtor can do with just enough tools to be dangerous.  It's less than 2 minutes. I used Windows Movie Maker, which was pretty easy to use, and good enough for now.  I will be improving my skills and bringing some better videos in days to come.

This new Maui residential listing has the nicest pool I have seen in a long time.  The deep end is about 18 feet deep and you can jump right off the balcony into the pool!  Do you think you could spend some time lounging around here and enjoying the views?

When I saw this pool on Haiku Realtor Caravan the other day I wanted to jump right in.  Such a peaceful setting, and so inviting.  This home has not been on the market before.

Located near the end of a quiet country road that goes down to the Pacific Ocean, it comes with almost 3 acres of land, some outbuildings, and a horse arena.  This area receives plenty of rainfall to make everything green and fresh.  If you're looking for a nice Maui home in the country with a fabulous pool, then look no further.  Let me know if you'd like more details.

June 11th is King Kamehameha Day here in the islands, and it's a declared national holiday in Hawaii.  This famous monarch first established a united kingdom of Hawaii in 1795, uniting the islands of Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe, Maui, and Hawai'i.  It has been an official holiday since 1871, and these days is usually celebrated with a floral parade, hula competitions, and the draping of his statue with long strands of flower lei (including his statue at the U.S. Capitol).

Lisa Alo (an AR member btw) just opened this sweet book and music store that features local talent.  We have some great musicians and writers and artists right here on Maui, and why not showcase them all in one place!

Lisa plans on having book signings, live music and other demonstrations in her spacious shop.  This new Paia shop will be sure to attract a lot of attention in the months to come.  There is parking right next to the building, and it's also an easy walk from the public parking lot around the corner.  Next time you're shopping in Paia, be sure to stop in to Be Happy...and check out the nice selection of items, including some unique gift ideas.

Driving to Lahaina for lunch

Just yesterday I found myself on a sudden drive over to Lahaina town, on the west side of Maui.  We had to pick up a piece of equipment, for a backhoe, and after business was done, we wound up on Front Streetin Lahaina for a bite of lunch.  This colorful historic old whaling town has plenty of shops and restaurants.  We ate at Bubba Gump's, right on the seawall with oceanfront dining.  Why didn't I take a picture of the pear/berry salad I had?  It was yummy.

That's Front Street that has the seawall, and the old buildings along the shore.  The huge tree makes shade over the open air market that sells trinkets to the tourists.

I don't usually blog about West Maui, but it is so scenic I just had to share some of these pictures.

Usually you'll find me on the north shore in Paia and Haiku

Aloha from Maui!
