The Palms at Wailea - Market snapshot for January 2009

Here's an update for this vacation resort at the edge of Wailea Maui Hawaii. 

The Palms at Wailea is a cluster of 23 buildings on over 16 lush acres.  The development was built in the early '90's.

The units are well designed, with over 1,000 sf of comfortable interior space, and large covered lanais.  All units have an open floor plan for the living/dining/kitchen area, a washer and dryer, and a dishwasher.  These condos can be used for vacation rentals, and many guests come back year after year to stay in the same unit, sometimes for months at a time.  Every evening you can enjoy a romantic  Maui sunset right from your lanai

The grounds are beautifully maintained and full of tropical flowers and foliage.  There's a gorgeous pool with ocean views overlooking the manicured grounds.  The club house by the pool has a front desk to help guests check in and out.

The Kalakupua Playground in Haiku has reopened after a four-month closure
for repairs.  Teens on Call was hired to replace unsafe boards.  The
20,000-square-foot playground at the 4th Marine Division Park was built by
volunteers and opened in 2004.  Friends of the Playground Ohana, the
nonprofit group that cleans and maintains the facility, are looking for a

What sold in Paia Maui last year? Here's a synopsis of the market. The lowest priced home was a fixer-upper in Skill Village.  The highest priced was a 2 acre Spreckelsville estate.

total volume - $14,578,200

price range $350,000 -$2,250,000

average price - $857,541

median price - $630,000

DTV comes to Hawaii - Jan 15 2009

On Thursday Jan 15 2009, Hawaii will be the first state to experience the DTV conversion.  It's coming to the rest of the country one month later.  Are you ready for it?  At noon, Hawaii's full-power TV stations turn off their analog signals in favor of all-digital broadcasting.  Some communities will probably lose their signal due to the location of the new digital transmitters at a lower elevation in Ulupalakua, as opposed to atop Haleakala.  The new transmitters have a decreased signal coverage, leaving a lot of customers out of luck.

The FCC has a website to help Hawaii consumers with the transition to Digital TV.  The DTV switch will not affect households with cable or satellite TV service.

Many rural parts of Maui don't have cable service, and rely on satellite for their TV viewing.  That includes me and my neighborhood in Huelo.  We have done all we can by getting the converter box and new antenna, and tomorrow we'll find out whether or not we will be hostage to the Dish Network forever.

The day after update - things went pretty smoothly, but I'm out of luck!  Read the Maui News story here.  I didn't realize why we were the first, but it was due to working around the nesting schedule of the dark-rumped petrel!  Isn't that considerate?

POLO BEACH CLUB - WAILEA MAUI HAWAII - BEACHFRONT CONDOS FOR SALE

If you're looking for a fabulous hi-rise beachfront condo on Maui, you would love the Polo Beach Club Resort in Wailea, on the south shore.

Hawaii is a smoke-free state

A couple of years ago Hawaii became the 14th state to enact laws prohibiting smoking in public buildings and places.  Not only is smoking prohibited inside the workplace, but also within 20 feet of the entrance or windows.   We all know that second-hand smoke is harmful, so it seemed like a good idea to make a more pleasant experience for visitors.  All hotel rooms are now smoke free. 

What happened to some of the businesses though, who cater to cigarette smokers?  Lately I have heard that some bars and restaurants have decided not to enforce the law.  They comply by posting signs as required, but don't punish their patrons who prefer to light up while enjoying their beer.

What are the rules in your state?  Do you think this is a good law? 

I think it's a good thing, especially since Hawaii has a climate that encourages people to be outside a lot.  If you must smoke, why not step outside and enjoy the fresh air!

This little farm in Kula has the best selection of fresh locally grown fruits and veggies.  I was surprised to find local raspberries when I went there for the first time.  Look at all the wonderful little plants and local flowers you can buy too. 

If you drive up to Kula on the Kula Highway, it will be on your right, very close to Rice Park.  It's a beautiful drive upcountry, so plan on taking your time and stopping for some pictures along the way.  Other points of interest nearby are Kula Botanical Gardens, La Provence Restaurant, and Keokea Park.

While driving around in Kula you might be interested in some Kula homes for sale.  Right now there's a great selection of new and resale homes, and building lots, starting in the $300,000's.
