Yesterday my dad and I drove out to the little Kaukini Gallery and gift shop in Kahakuloa Maui. The drive is beautiful and you'll see some incredible scenery along the north shore of West Maui. The road hugs the cliffs in a lot of places, and sometimes it's only one lane, with a sheer drop off right next to the car, and no guardrails! The nice part is, you're driving slow enough to enjoy the scenery (if you dare take your eyes off the road!).
There are some wide spots to pull over and take pictures or just drink it all in. Not many people use this road, mostly just local traffic and some tourists who want to get off the beaten path. It's well worth it, just to get to the gallery.
I got some nice pictures and will post more later, but for now, this will have to do.

Believe it or not, there are some very arid regions on Maui, where cactus and succulents thrive. Take a look at these stunning specimens which are mostly from Kula Maui, on the slopes on Haleakala.

Did you hear about the dolphin rescue in Kihei? About 10-20 dolphins were
trying to beach themselves in front of Sugar Beach late one afternoon, when
passersby jumped into the water to help them. About 40 people got in the
water and wrestled with the dolphins to turn them around. Some dolphins
kept coming back to shore and 3 or 4 actually got to the sand. After much
struggling they managed to get the dolphins back out to deeper water and
they all swam off. Though this isn't the preferred method of saving
dolphins, but it seemed to have worked. If you encounter such a situation
you are requested to call the stranding and entanglement hot line at (888)
256-9840 for advice.

JAWS - Peahi Maui famous surf break goes off this week - pics and videos
By now the whole world is aware that a big storm-generated ocean swell hit the Hawaiian Islands early this week. On Maui that means that the JAWS surf break in Peahi was epic and abuzz with activity. Swells of about 30 feet were hammering in on the north shore on Monday and Tuesday. This famous surf spot is hard to get to, but when the time comes, there's no stopping the crowd. In the water were surfers and jetskis, and assorted boats. In the air a bright yellow helicopter was getting some awesome footage of the tow-in surfing. High up on the shore hundreds of spectators and photographers were lined up and jostling for position. It was a circus!

The Villas at Kehalani are perched on 16 acres at the top of the development, and are comprised of 103 elegant 2-story townhomes in 5 tiers, 6 buildings per tier. Buildings will contain either 2,3, or 4 apartments in a variety of 3 basic types. Most are 3 bedroom units, but 2 and 4 bedroom units are also available.

Maui Hawaii Real Estate - November 2009 Statistics
Here are some highlights of the monthly market stats put out by our Realtors Association of Maui. Click here for the full 14 page detailed report.
Days on Market - Residential homes = 168 DOM, Condos = 192 DOM, Land = 284 DOM (calculated from List Date to Closing Date)
Paia/Spreckelsville came in with the second highest median house prices, after Kaanapali. For condo sales, Wailea/Makena continue to lead the market for high price. Land prices appear to be the highest in Lahaina, followed by the central area of Kahului/Wailuku. As you can imagine, this can change every month if one or two extremely high priced sales occur.
Year to Date - total sales for immediately past 12 months: Residential = 646, Condo = 780, Land = 101
Total dollar volume SOLD is down 41% for homes, and down 24% for condos.

I heard about Lee's Pet Grooming the other day from some friends and decided to give it a try. I took Kona in for a pedicure (get her toenails trimmed and filed) and left her to play with some other dogs for an hour and a half. She got to meet some chihuahuas and a big German Shepherd dog, and a couple of resident kitties. The young kitties were in the process of having their baths, so they were all wet. Kona loved playing with the kitties, but it was time to go. She could have cared less that I was there to pick her up!
I know I'll be back with Kona so she can spend some time playing while I get my chores in town done.
If your dog is a mess, call up Lee's Pet Grooming and arrange to have a doggie play day. Your doggie will love you for it. The shop is across from the Maui Toyota service department, right near Del's Farm Supply.

Three men married wives from different countries. The first man married a woman from China. He told her that she was to do their dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.
The second man married a woman from Italy. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done and there was a huge dinner on the table.
The third man married a girl from Canada. He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher.

Today was the Kula Maui version of the Upcountry Realtor Caravan. It was such a beautiful day and the properties were quite varied. One of the Kula homes for sale had a fantastic garden that was just like a manicured park! I got some nice plant shots, as you can see here. The climate in Kula is so perfect, and the soil is rich, making for wonderful growing conditions. Do you have a green thumb?
