The Maui Planning Commission is working on their long range plan for Maui.
In the next 6 months they'll be holding meetings where the public are
encouraged to attend.  The first meeting will be held at the Haiku Community
Center on May 5th from 1:30 pm until dark.  Topics of discussion will be New
Urbanism, growth boundaries, and zoning.  Please make an effort to attend if
you're able, and give them some feedback.

This past Sunday on Maui there was a big celebration at Baldwin Beach Park, just outside of Paia.  It was to be an Earth Day celebration, with information booths, entertainment and food.  Since the permits weren't obtained in time, they had to downsize the event.  Nevertheless, there was a huge amount of cars parked at the park, and up and down the Hana Highway.  So many cars in fact, that we decided to skip it and headed to the next closest beach, at the other end of Baldwin Beach. 

If you drive through the residential area of Spreckelsville, towards the Maui Country Club, you'll find this beautiful stretch of white sand, known as Baby Beach.  The large tidepool makes a great safe place for small kids to play in the water.  Well we certainly enjoyed ourselves for a couple of hours.  The usual tradewinds were nowhere to be found, and the sun was shining.  It sure feels good to relax at the beach and swim in the ocean.

Today on Maui it is HOT.  The tradewinds have stopped blowing and the sun is out, and it is HOT.  I would love to jump into this swimming pool, with the waterfall grotto and surround sound speakers. 

This wonderful new Makawao listing has a home with too many features to list here.  It's the pool that I'm in love with.  Right now I want this pool!  And yes, you can go skinny dipping here, because it's very private.  Nobody will see you.

Lucky for me, although this pool is not in my back yard, I do have access to mountain pools today.  I'm off to a private property on the north shore of Maui, with waterfalls and pools, and I'm taking the dogs.  We're going swimming!  I'll be back with more pictures soon.

Maui Homes for Sale - Bathtubs with a view

Here on Maui the weather is so good we like to enjoy being outdoors whenever we can.  This has even carried over to home design.  I will often see beautiful Maui homes for sale like these, where there are no window coverings in the bathroom. 

Why spoil the view?

OK so this one here is a little cloudy... yes those are clouds outside at a higher elevation up in Kula.  On a sunny day you would be able to see the ocean from this Kula home.

Why didn't I bring my swimsuit this day?  It was so hot in Wailea Maui and I really wanted to jump in to cool off.  I don't think they would appreciate me skinny dipping in their infinity pool at Kai Malu - a Wailea residential community on Maui's south shore.  No sir! 

On the other hand, everyone knows you can swim naked at Makena's Little Beach, which is just around the corner from Makena Big Beach.

Wake Up - we're here to see the house....

Today I was showing some Paia Maui homes for sale to some new buyers, let's call them John and Sue.  We managed to get into one home on very short notice, the agent gave us the lock box number and said it was OK. 

It looked a little like someone might be home... pickup truck in the driveway, junk in the yard.  I thought it was going to be vacant.  So I knocked on the door and got no response.  It was about 11 in the morning.  I opened up the front door and peered in, and shouted out "HELLO".  No response again.  I let the buyers in to have a look at this property which is listed as a short sale.  John walked down the hall to check out the bedrooms and turned right around and headed for the front door saying "let's get out of here, someone's home!".  The tenant had been sleeping, but woke up when John entered the bedroom.  I don't know who was more surprised, the buyer or the tenant.

First impressions mean a lot when it comes to real estate.  This kind of thing really puts buyers off a listing and you can never undo that feeling. 

Luckily the next home we saw was just the opposite, neat and tidy, with a smiling seller to show us around.  What a difference.

April 1 1980 - Moving to Maui

Today is the 29th anniversary of our move to Maui.  It seems like a long time ago, yet only a few years.  What a long fun trip it's been.

Back then we were so young and foolish, and impulsive.  We just left everything behind back in Vancouver, Canada and took the plunge.  I think we had about $9,000. in cash and a whole lot of good intentions to get us started.  Maybe we were fooling ourselves?

We rented a cottage upcountry off Kauhikoa Road, a cute little place.  Paid the first and last month's rent and unpacked our bags.  Life in Haiku Maui was going to be great!  We bought a brand new dirt bike for wheels and we were all set to begin a new life.

Well that first month in Haiku it rained every evening.  We'd be gone all day and come home in the rain, getting soaking wet on the bike.  OK this isn't working, we thought, let's move to Kihei where it's always sunny!  So we gave our notice and moved out after only 2 months.

Kihei was fun for a few more months.  The Kihei beaches are great, and so many of them.  The days were sunny and the nights were warm, and the air was scented with plumeria.  We could walk to Foodland and get ice cream at night.  It was kind of romantic.  It was also so friggin hot and dusty that it got old fast.  Time for a new plan.

To make a long story short, we ended up on the north shore, in Kuau, just on the edge of Paia.  Ah, the north shore... big waves, tradewinds, friendly people, and the natural beauty of Maui all around.  This was home.  This is home.  We still love Maui's north shore and have settled right in. 

That was 29 years ago!  Where does the time go?  We had our ups and downs in those first years and I won't say it's all been easy because it wasn't.  But we made a lot of good friends and have some incredible stories to tell.  I hope the next 29 years will be just as exciting. ( I hope I'm still alive then! )
