I hope you all had a great Christmas weekend with lots of fun times and good things to eat.  As you can see I got some new iPhone photo apps for Christmas, and a day at the beach... Makena Beach - the best beach on Maui!  It was crowded too!  All I wanted was a day at the beach to swim in the small waves and get a little sun, so I guess I got everything I wanted!  How about you?

How to grow your own Christmas trees in Haiku Maui

We are lucky to have a mini forest of Norfolk Island Pines on our Haiku property, and this year I noticed the sprouts coming up after a wet spell in late summer.  My sister in law planted these beautiful trees about 20 years ago and now they are huge mature trees ready to reproduce.

1.  dig up some sprouts that volunteer under the trees in the wet season

2.  plant them in small pots with a rich potting mix

3.  transplant to larger pots each year or as needed, fertilize from time to time

4.  3 years later... a nice small Christmas tree, ready for plantig, sale or for decorating.

It's really easy to grow so many things in Haiku Maui.  It's a perfect climate with plenty of rainfall, and not too many droughts.  Pine trees, fruit trees, tropical flowers and vegetables all grow well in Haiku.  Let me help you find a property where you can start your own garden and Christmas trees.  I know where all the good spots are.

Salad greens on a rainy day - Haiku Maui HI

It may be a rainy day in Haiku Maui, but I managed to venture out between showers and grab enough greens for a yummy garden salad.

Winter weather can make it challenging to keep food on the table year round, but it's worth it when you can eat food this fresh.

Here's the next crop of salad greens ready to be planted when the sun comes out for a few days.  Maybe the garden goddess has been watching.

Aloha Friday - big waves and rainbows on Maui's north shore

Today was absolutely beautiful on Maui.  After a week of rainy winter weather it was so nice to feel the sunshine and see some big waves along the north shore by Paia Maui.

Kitesurfers were out in force, as well as windsurfers, and photographers in helicopters.

Out in the country a passing shower brings a double rainbow to oceanfront pastures. 

Living in Paia and Haiku will get you close to the beaches and ocean, and the north shore lifestyle.  What are you looking for?

Makawao Maui HI 96768 - stick art installation at the Hui No'eau Dec 2011

I got to see the newly created sculpture garden myself for the first time today when I stopped in at "the Hui".  I heard about this wonderful stick art installation and wanted to see it and photograph it.  

These pictures are from today at the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center on Baldwin Ave. just below the town of Makawao.  The STICKWORK was created by Patrick Dougherty from invasive tree saplings, along with the help of many volunteers.

Preparing your Maui home for winter

While the rest of the country hunkers down for the long winter ahead, here in Hawaii we take a different approach to prepare for the winter season:

• close the windows and sliding doors
• put the extra blankets on the beds
• check the BBQ grill and see if it's time for a new one
• clean out the boxes of junk from the guest bedroom and make up the bed for guests
• wash the spare car and get it ready for visitors
• put up Christmas lights

 You asked - what is that bush with the red berries growing in Haiku Maui?

That shrub or tree is called Christmas Berry because it makes lovely red berries in the winter time. Actually the little red berries are something you would find in a peppercorn mix... the pink red black multicolored peppercorns.  It's a pretty bush at Christmas time.

Christmas berry trees grow wild in Haiku and other lowland parts of Maui, and they can become sort of a weed, growing into dense thickets.  This native shrub from Brazil can be cut down to make good firewood though so it's all good.  Birds like the berries, and honey bees too.

Maui County Real Estate Market Stats for November 2011 - things are selling!

The numbers are in and the results sound promising, compared to last year.  Comparing the period of January 1 - December 1 2011 to the same period in 2010:

• Residential unit sales rose 10%. Average sold price is $775,283 - that's up 2%.  Total dollar volume was $634,957,051 - that's up 13%.
• Condo unit sales volume is up 1%.  Average sold price is $496,199 - that's down 24%
• Land unit sales rose 9%.  Total dollar volume was $75,805,725 - up 34%

Big wave season is upon us on Maui's north shore

It's that time of year again, when the winter swells hit the north shore of the Hawaiian islands.  Ho'okipa Beach Park is the favorite place on Maui for windsurfers and surfers to test themselves against the forces of nature.  There were only a few surfers out when I passed by.

This guy has the right idea and I bet he got some great shots of the waves.  Plenty of people were watching the big sets roll in today.

Where do old sailboards go when they get past their expiration date?  They get turned into fences around here!

Tuesday's Treasure from the north shore of Maui - brand new calf in December

On the mainland you might not want your new calves coming in December, but here on Maui it doesn't matter so much.  Any time of year is a great time to welcome a new member to the herd.  This lucky little fella is posing with his mom and dad as they graze to their heart's content in Haiku Maui.  

Haiku Maui is the perfect place to raise animals or crops, all year long.  With ample rainfall, it stays this green always.  No need to pen these guys up and fatten them on corn when they have access to all this grass.
