Aloha Friday - big waves and rainbows on Maui's north shore

Today was absolutely beautiful on Maui.  After a week of rainy winter weather it was so nice to feel the sunshine and see some big waves along the north shore by Paia Maui.

Kitesurfers were out in force, as well as windsurfers, and photographers in helicopters.

Big wave season is upon us on Maui's north shore

It's that time of year again, when the winter swells hit the north shore of the Hawaiian islands.  Ho'okipa Beach Park is the favorite place on Maui for windsurfers and surfers to test themselves against the forces of nature.  There were only a few surfers out when I passed by.

The Maui Makani Classic tears up the waves this week on the north shore of Maui

The Maui Makani Classic - (Press Release)

WAILUKU, Maui, Hawai`i – The County of Maui is pleased to welcome the return of professional windsurfing to Ho`okipa Beach Park.

The Maui Makani Classic kicks off on October 27 and runs until November 1st, with competition running three days out of the six day window. The Classic is the championship leg for the American Windsurfing Tour and marks the return of the sport to Ho`okipa, the international mecca of windsurfing.

“There is no better place for windsurfing than right here on Maui, and we are proud to be hosting world class events once more,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “What Halloween does for Lahaina, big windsurfing events will do for Paia.

We’re going to get our economy going one town at a time if we have to.”

The contest has reached its 100 competitor limit and the wait list continues to grow as the excitement mounts for the long anticipated return of windsurfing to Ho`okipa. There are competitors traveling to Maui from over 20 countries including Argentina, Chile, China, South Korea, Morocco, Ireland and Japan. There are five divisions for each event: expert, amateur, youth, masters and women. Competitors may sign up for one age division and/or one skill division.

Windsurfing at Ho`okipa usually attracts hundreds of spectators. In order to help with traffic congestion in the area, free parking will be provided at Old Maui High School in Hamakuapoko and free shuttle bus services provided by the Maui County Veterans Association and the Disabled American Veterans will continually run throughout the days of competition. There will be no parking allowed on the sides of the highway.  The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to the windsurfing competition there are a number of Makani Classic events to which the public is invited, including:

- Makani Classic opening night party at the Kahului Ale House, October 26, 8 p.m.

- Makani Classic Opening Ceremony, Ho`okipa Beach Park, Oct. 27, 10 a.m.

- Goya and Quatro Party, Pauwela Cannery in Haiku, 6 to 10 p.m.

- Fourth Friday in Paia, 6 to 9 p.m.

- Maui Ultra Lounge Party, Neil Pryde in Kahului, 6 to 9 p.m.

- Pizza with the Pros, Flatbread Pizza in Paia, 6 to 10 p.m.

- Makani Classic closing ceremonies, hosted by Maui Babe and held at the Maui Tropical Plantation, featuring entertainment, food, cash bar and award presentations, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m., tickets $10 per person.

This week the weather has been exceptional on Maui, and Sept 6th the air was so clear you could see all the outer islands  so clearly!  That's Molokai in the background of the 2nd picture.

Both pictures taken at Ho'okipa Beach Park just on the outside of Paia town, on Maui's north shore.  This day they were stand up paddling at Pavillions.  Today when I drove by they were kite surfing at Lanes.  It's a great park for water sports like surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, paddling, SUP-ing, swimming, snorkeling and diving.  We are so lucky here on Maui to be blessed with near perfect weather every day.

The ocean playground on the north shore is for everyone to enjoy, with lots of beaches and parks.  Are you looking for a home on the north shore, where you can be close to the ocean?  Start your oceanfront Maui home search here, then call a Maui Realtor to guide you through the steps of owning a home on Maui.

Windsurfers at Ho'okipa Beach Park on a windy Maui day - short video

Windsurfers at Ho'okipa Beach Park on a windy Maui day - short video

Ho'okipa Beach Park is one of the best known windsurfing destinations on the planet.  This little beach on the north shore of Maui is quite famous and popular with people from all over.  Due to good wind and wave conditions, you can usually launch your rig almost any day of the year.  In the summer time this park is blessed with strong winds, and in the winter the big waves come up and can reach as high as 40'.  Kitesurfers and surfers also enjoy this spot and it's a rare day when you'll see nobody out.

Paia town is just a couple of minutes away, where you can find shops and services, many restaurants, gas stations, a bank and a post office.  Pretty much anything you need, including lodging.

If Paia and Maui North Shore real estate is what you're after, there's lots of that for sale too.  This part of Maui is in demand and prices range from affordable to outrageous.  As you can imagine, the closer you get to the ocean, the more expensive the housing prices, with oceanfront homes for sale at a premium.

Maui north shore gets first winter swell of 2010 - 30 foot waves

Maui north shore gets first winter swell of 2010 - 30 foot waves

It's that time of year again... big wave season in Hawaii.  The night of November 1 brought the first big swell of the winter season to Maui's north shore.  We could hear the giant waves crashing on shore, all night long.  By early morning the hard core tow-in surfers were in place at JAWS with their jet skis and boards.  Hookipa Beach Park was closed out to surfers - too dangerous!

The air along the north shore was filled with salt spray, almost like a fog!  Traffic coming into the little beach town of Paia was crazy, with everyone wanting a look at the giant surf.  They weren't dissappointed.  I only had time to do a quick drive by of the waves as I had other appointments, but did see some huge rollers hit the shore.

This is what makes the north shore of Maui so exciting... big wave action and the daring people who live for this!  If you ever get a chance to see it, you will never forget the power in these waves!

Aloha Friday - Whatever - video at Ho'okipa Beach Park

pinata fish

Aloha Friday from Ho'okipa Beach Park, Maui Hawaii

We were just hanging out at a baby luau - you know, when the baby makes 1 year it's a big deal here in the islands - and waiting for the food!  haha

So I took some pictures and some video clips as a way to kill time.  Why waste perfectly good video of a sunny beach scene on Maui?   I'm not waiting until Friday to post this. Watch it - it's only 39 seconds of your life!  If you're dreaming of Maui, this might help you get by until your next trip over here.  Pretend that's you out there windsurfing or surfing, or even sunbathing.

Cute pinata isn't it?  Didn't stick around long enough for the frenzied bashing of such a pretty fish, but that would have been some good footage!

I've got plenty more where this came from - other videos from the north shore of Maui:

YouTube video - Maui's Ho'okipa Beach Park and a monk seal sighting

YouTube video - Maui's Ho'okipa Beach Park and a monk seal sighting

I made this little movie a few months ago and have neglected to post it here and spread the word.  Now that I have a few minutes, here we go.

It's just a short 2 minute movie with lots of big waves, beach scenes, and other north shore Maui stuff that you see any old day here in paradise.  I spent a lot of time editing and adding music, to make your viewing experience better, so please take a quick look.

I used a FLIP video for the footage, and MacBook Pro i-Movie for the editing

Ho'okipa Beach Park Driveby - short scenic video

HO'OKIPA BEACH PARK DRIVEBY - a short (minute and a half) movie compiled from some video and slides, with an acoustic slack key soundtrack added.  You will get to see the beach, some windsurfers, and a nice rainbow over the park.  For those of you who don't know... Ho'okipa Beach is on the north shore of Maui, and it's famous as a prime surfing and windsurfing spot.

I am still getting the hang of this (movie making), so bear with me.  I'd like to say mahalo to Makana for the cool music.  After hearing him play at the slack key guitar festival on Maui, I bought his CD.  You can find his CD's at local music stores here in Hawaii, and online.

Ho'okipa Beach Park - Maui HI - December 2007

Beach scene on maui's north shore

hanging out at Hookipa Park Maui

Today was another beautiful day on Maui - the Kona storm has passed and things are back to normal here on the north shore.

This was the scene at Ho'okipa Beach Park, with the usual smattering of beach-goers, surfers, windsurfers and kite-boarders.  Waves were mid size, nothing like the 20-footers we had last week.  With the warm water and gentle tradewinds, it was a perfect day for going to the beach.

I stopped in with my dad and we both took some pictures.  It didn't long to get a bunch of good shots, and we were back on our way.  No time for swimming today, there's Christmas shopping to do.

See more of today's pictures on Localism.com

painted maui coconut - aloha

Nearby Paia town has some great shops filled with those special little things to mail off to family on the mainland.  There are some tourist shops, lots of boutiques and various restaurants, some food stores, and much more.  I bought a nice painted coconut, and some locally made jewelry, and a cute pottery turtle.  My dad found himself a colorful aloha shirt and some other knick knacks.  We went to Mana Foods for the fresh veggies and milk we needed.  Got some cards and things mailed off at the Post Office, and then we were done.

Hookipa Beach Park Maui Hawaii

Ho'okipa is Hawaiian for "to make welcome" and it's a great place to meet people for a day in the sun and surf, and to make a party.  Kids are always coming and going to surf at "pavils" on the north side of the beach where it's a little more protected, and the waves are smaller.

The park has good facilities such as showers and bathrooms, plenty of parking, and shady pavilions for sitting and eating and talking story.  There are barbecues and fresh water taps, so cooking and clean up is made easy.  We used to party here a lot when we lived much closer, but lately it's only once in a while, usually when there's a surf contest for the local kids.  It's about that time of year again, and I'm ready!
