Charley's Restaurant in Paia Maui Hawaii - a local dining experience to remember
As long time north shore Maui residents, we have been eating at Charley's for decades! It's been a real landmark in Paia, and our Jim Sanders Realty office is right across the street. So the other night we were hungry and thinking about where to eat in Paia. We decided to take our chances at Charley's... sometimes it's OK and sometimes it's really good!
Well we got lucky on Wednesday night when we picked Charley's. There was nobody in the front dining room (a little early perhaps), but a pretty good crowd in the bar in back. The comfy booths in between the front and back rooms were very inviting, and I think they must have been recently upholstered. The place looked a little "freshened up" since we were last there in fact. 
Charley's is rather notorious in the area, and there have been many wild nights with police in attendance to break up the fights... usually something to do with the pool table. If you come for their famous breakfast (think macadamia nut pancakes, breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros) you might even see a famous local celebrity (think Willie Nelson).
This night we had a new waiter who was very keen to please, and he was a real winner, bringing us Stella Artois draft and pink cocktails to go with the seared sashimi. For a main event we both had the chef's special - beer battered tiger prawns in a peanut satay sauce with a hint of mint, rice and sauteed veggies, and a garden salad. They make their own papaya-seed dressing and it's always the best I've ever had.
Speaking of Willie Nelson... this is where he likes to play and sing when he gets a chance, and we've caught a show or two of his. Word of mouth ticket sales usually precede the radio announcement. If you ever get a chance to see his show here, you're in for a good time.

Georgina- I felt like I was right there at Charley's as you gave this very revealing overview and your experience. What a fun place! The prawns with Peanut sauce look scrumptious.

Katerina - I'm taking a tip from you, and putting my hubby in the post! Don't tell him. lol
Karina - what storm? Just kidding. We are always prepared - we supply our own power and water, and there's food right outside the door. If it's just wind and rain, we're used to that.
Georgina, What a nice diner...Charley's sounds wonderful. All our diners look the same and really only good for breakfast at any time!
Georgina- Way to go, I did notice your hubby! It really makes things personal and connecting. :)
I like the pancakes here..... yet Charlies is a hit or miss with me, the service is not what I would call customer friendly. But if you want to party with the wild kids of Maui at night time then there's always a good mix of locals, surfers and beautiful women. And always a good dose of loud danceable music.
Carole - It's not really a diner, just a funky place to eat or hang out.

Jeff - you never know... when it's super busy it can kind of suck. Our waiter was very nice - never saw him before. Othertimes, it helps to get a waitress you know... like Sue.
