Wanda, Shoshana, and Robert - thanks for the quick comments! Of course it's just a fake bug made from aluminum. I couldn't find one that big that would pose so nicely, and don't want to scare off anybody either.

That's one very brave puppy, even if the bug is made of aluminum. One day I'll have to make it over there to see what they're like for real.
