Willie Nelson played a free concert at Charley's in Paia

*PAIA MAUI dining and food *

A few days ago we heard about it, I think it was on Facebook... Willie Nelson was going to be playing a surprise free concert somewhere on Maui.  Well it was no surprise that it was in Paia, at Charley's Restaurant and Saloon, Willie's favorite Maui hangout.  Word spreads fast on the coconut wireless.

Yesterday I was in the Paia office at Jim Sanders Realty, right across the street from Charley's, and I snapped some pictures of the crowd starting to line up for the free show.  It was supposed to start around 7 and this was the line up about 4 pm.  I hear the line up was still there at 8 pm!  I bet it was a great show.

What a great time that must've been, and the weather looks beautiful. Maybe one day I'll see Maui!

Troy - yes it was a beautiful day, as usual

Katerina - no we didn't go this time.  We have seen him play here before, when you can buy a ticket and just go right in.  I don't think I would want to stand in line for hours just to save $25.

Not too many people do free concerts.  Must have been MOBBED.

I'm with you, Lady.  I'd rather buy a ticket than stand in line for hours just to keep $25.00 in my pocket.  I could go make several times that and then spend the $25.00.

But FREE is FREE and there will always be people who value their time at (hmm, four hours in line to save $25.00 - $6.25 per hour).  I think I could do better getting some work done.

You've got a beautiful place there.  Maybe one of these days, I'll get there to visit.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.  I appreciate it.

Erby, $25 to see Willie Nelson, where have you been for the last 20 years?  I am very impressed that someone that could have charged about whatever he wanted would do a free show.  Garth Brooks was another great performer that would sell tickets for $15 just to help out the fans.  I got to see the Who and Bruce Sringstein for $10, but that was back in the day when internet companies were sponsoring everything.  I miss great performers that weren't just in if for the money.  Way to go Willie.

$25.00 was from Georgina's comment above.

I've only been to one concert.  California Jam in April of 1974 at the Ontario Motor Speedway in California.  600,000 some people there.  It was a blast.  But that was it for me.  I'm not much for crowds anymore and surely not for standing in line for anything more than a few minutes.

From Wikpedia:

California Jam was a rock music festival concert held at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California on April 6, 1974 and produced by Sandy Feldman and Lenny Stogel. It attracted over 600,000 fans and was one of the last of the original wave of rock festivals, as well as one of the most well-executed and financially successful, and presaged the era of media consolidation and the corporatization of the rock music industry.

Willie is a great guy, and when he's on Maui he usually plays a gig here at Charley's, for cheap or free.  It helps out the restaurant, and gives the locals a chance to see him play in a small venue.  I'm not much for the big crowds anymore either.
