Things grow big in Hawaii.  Many years ago I found an avocado by the side of the road that was as big as a loaf of bread.  It was huge and it tasted wonderful.  I have never seen one like it since

Great title!  I couldn't really appreciate it until I saw the last photo.  Those are amazing.

Wow! I started laughing as soon as I saw the picture and then wondered. "is it edible"? and then started thinking of the things you could make out of a gourd that big!

Oh...and I would not want to be walking beneath one of those things when it decided to plummet to earth!

A friend sent us these seeds from Texas - the seeds were huge.  He said they would grow gourds as big as a picnic cooler, and he's not kidding.  That one in the tree did end up falling, and got a split on the bottom.  The last one is growing in an old bulldozer bucket, and it's still getting bigger.  I don't know what we'll do with them except sit back and be amazed!  I'm thinking of entering that large one in the County Fair which is coming up this next month.  I'll be saving the seeds for next year.

Amazing size, and it also seems to be very symmetrical. Those Texas gourds are really enjoying their time in Hawaii.

Hey Georgina, I've seen them painted as cute birdhouses here in GA. I think you might have a turkey vulture size ;)

I used to grow birdhouse gourds.  They are so interesting.

Wow .... I have never seen a gourd that big and I've seen some big ones here.
You absolutely should enter them in the Fair.  Good luck. :)

Latest count - 11 gourds!  3 new ones hanging from the tree, and plenty more on the ground.  I hope this vine won't take over the whole property.
