JAWS - Peahi Maui famous surf break goes off this week - pics and videos

By now the whole world is aware that a big storm-generated ocean swell hit the Hawaiian Islands early this week.  On Maui that means that the JAWS surf break in Peahi was epic and abuzz with activity.  Swells of about 30 feet were hammering in on the north shore on Monday and Tuesday.  This famous surf spot is hard to get to, but when the time comes, there's no stopping the crowd.  In the water were surfers and jetskis, and assorted boats.  In the air a bright yellow helicopter was getting some awesome footage of the tow-in surfing.  High up on the shore hundreds of spectators and photographers were lined up and jostling for position.  It was a circus!

Georgina, this Wednesday, I'm leaving for Maui, and I'm loving your photos and videos of your island!  I've been hearing about these waves, and this video is amazing!  What a sense of balance those guys have!  Yikes!

Georgina - My boyfriend, Ron, is a surfer - always has been since he was a kid - so you know what this does to him - he has never surfed Hawaii -

Georgina - I have been to and done a lot of scary things in my life but this sends chills through me!  It must be an incredible sense of freedom and power to conquer those waves.  The video is amazing.

Georgina - thanks for sharing this. They was talking about the big waves the other night on the weather with the expectation that we would have some as well, although not NEARLY as big as yours. I haven't had time to take a jaunt over to the coast to see - I suspect I missed whatever might have been big surf.

I cannot imagine surfing on waves like that. I can't even imagine surfing. LOL
