Maui Blog - Georgina M. Hunter R(S): Whole Foods Market opens on Maui - big whoop!

Whole Foods Market opens on Maui - big whoop!

Whole Foods Market opens in Kahului Maui 96732.  Grand Opening of Whole Foods Market on Maui.

We made it to the new Whole Foods Market on day 3 and the crowds were still pretty thick.  This is an exciting time for Maui - and we have been long anticipating the new upscale grocery store where the old Star Market used to be (at the Maui Mall).

They're open from 8 am to 9 pm daily.

Whole Foods Market opens on Maui - big whoop!

It's not a huge store by mainland standards ( only 26,366 sf), but they sure do pack a lot of good things in there.  Look at all that fresh local fruit!  They say they are using about 60 Maui vendors for things from Maui Gold pineapples to Surfing Goat Dairy goat cheese.

Once the crowds thin out I'm looking forward to spending more time browsing their selections.  The ready-to-eat items looked really tempting, and it's nice to have another good place to eat lunch in this town.

And just look at the view from the parking lot!  You'll find this store in the Maui Mall, along with Long's Drugs, and more.

Hi Georgina, The exotics ( flowers) are my favorite . When I visited Hawai, I kept buying flowers every day , put them in the room over night and then gave them to people in the hotel. The Hotel suplied all the Vases and never charged me a penny.

Hi Georgina,

I drove by the STAR market today and was very surprised that it was no longer STAR.   I went out today and watched some whales (and got a nice sunburn!).  I didn't go into the new grocery store, but now I will have to go and check it out.  I hope to go on a whale watching tour next week.  Keeping very busy and I never want to leave the island!!  I hope we will have a chance to meet up for lunch or coffee.  Hope your week is going well. :)

The Grand Opening looks like an EVENT.  It was at ours in Naples too.  I like your pictures especially the flowers.

Aloha Georgina,

You have to love the merchandising, it really makes the store. It's kind of sad that it takes an upscale(expensive) out of state grocer to sell a wide variety of locally grown produce. Maybe the other stores will start selling more local now.

Peace,

Hi Georgina.  Is this competition for Mana Foods?  Maybe prices will come down a bit.

Georgina, I love Whole Foods.....they are not inexpensive but when I see the chemicals that are in our food, I want organic.  They have a good selection as well as some pretty interesting desserts that are not bad for you!

We only have one Whole Foods here that I know of, and it is miles and miles and miles away from me. I do stop in occasionally when I have an inspection near them.

Whole Foods? Walgreens?  Pretty soon you won't have to ship anything.

Georgina- I absolutely love Whole Foods. When we got ours here in Wellington I was just beside myself. That is where I go out to dinner, for lunch, and do about 80% of my shopping. I love how they buy local and support local farmers!

How much are those local pineapples? We have local pineapples here for $2.99 each.

Gerogina - great pictures ..... but you cracked me right up as I don't believe I have ever seen a surfing goat that makes cheese

I really need to do a blog post on that Surfing Goat Dairy!  Believe it or not, it's a going concern here - it's a boutique goat dairy that sells their own cheese here locally.  They also have a petting zoo and gift shop and sell lunches and tours.

You are so lucky to have a Whole Foods! We used to shop in one in Houston often.  Now we don't have access to on in Valpo.  Maybe we will just have to come to Hawaii!
