At first I laughed, but now I like it! A new GPS for my car!

magellan GPS

My husband loves to buy gadgets, and recently he ordered a GPS for the car.  I used to laugh and think I didn't need a GPS to find my way around Maui.  After all, we've lived here for 30 years and I'm in real estate and know my way around don't I?   Hold on - wait a minute.

So I decided to give it a try.  I was showing a client some homes for sale in the upcountry areas of Pukalani and Kula.  We were seeing 7 homes that were widely scattered about.  I got my hubby to program in all the addresses, including the B&B where my client was staying in Makawao.

I set off with the GPS, ready for anything.  Once I got headed in the right direction on Kaupakalua Rd the little voice was right on with the directions.  It sure was handy as I talked on the phone trying to keep an escrow together at the 11th hour.  Didn't miss my destination and picked up my client.

As we proceeded to see Pukalani and Kula homes for sale it was very convenient to just let the little voice tell me where to turn.  It took a little getting used to, and I admit I turned too soon a time or two, but quickly got back on track.  What was really nice was being able to just drive and listen, and still be able to talk with my client.  No furtive glancing at the old fashioned map while driving.  I will definitely be trying this again when seeing multiple properties.

It's a Magellan.  We got a really good deal by ordering from Amazon.  Better price than anywhere else actually.  It was only $160.  They sure have gotten cheaper since they first came on the market.

Georgiana, I'm glad to hear you like your GPS.  I LOVE MINE!  I'm in a much bigger area in the Houston area and it gives me short cuts that I did not even know existed!

Georgina, this is too funny, I just post a blog a few days ago about my new GPS, it is also Magellan, I love it, we went to Nashville with it, it made the trip stress free.

Hi Georgina,

Good for you, I love mine too. And although I've been in the same community myself for 35 years every now and then I'm not 100% sure and had to use the old map book like you mentioned.

Since then I've used mine on trips all over the U.S. and it was a real life save in Australia last year. I wouldn't want to be without it. Btw, I dropped of my 8 year-old granddaughter at a friends, she programed the address for me.

Georgina,

I am very good with directions and I use my Garmin. It does give me short cuts and it also gets me around traffice. Probably one of the best technology purchases I've made in a while. When I travel, I take it with me. You never get lost. I love it.

I'm really looking forward to taking it traveling... should be a real time saver.

Fellow AR Bloggers,

I love having a GPS. I have a Tom Tom, it is one of the nicer ones, but it really is not living up to expectations. I hear great things about Garmin and Magellan.

I thought the same thing before I got one. I've lived in Brookfield Wisconsin most of my life and think I know where everything is. Mine was built in to my car, so I don't know what brand it is. But I have come to depend on it for keeping me from making silly driving direction mistakes.

I couldn't live without mine - It also allows me to continue my conversation with my clients and not having to concentrate so hard on directions. I have a Garmin and love it everytime I use it. Definitely worth the small investment

Hi Georgina, We have one built into my car and generally love it. Unfortunately the map updates are twice as much as a new non-built in unit, so I don't have some newer neighborhoods.  Glad to have it, even at 90%

Hi Georgie,

I too love the new little gadgets that we have at our fingertips these days.  I love not having to glance down and take my eyes off the road any more.  I drove to Sonora, CA with my Mother last year and I missed my turn.  The Garmin started yelling "turn left, turn left, turn left, turn left!!!"  With each set of turn lefts, it would get louder and faster!  Then it said, "Re-coordinating, re-coordinating, re-coordinating"  By the time we found our next turn, Mom and I were crying as we were laughing sooooo hard!  Now I just don't want to live with out it!

Very useful for traveling of course. But here in our small rural community I find that it is not so helpful. Just don't understand why it does not recognize "Jack's big red barn". Every one here knows that is where you have to turn!!

Georgina....I'm glad you like your GPS.  I've had one in my car for several years and find that it can really help get you around nicely.  I was in real estate in Maui in the late '80s and early '90s and remember looking for properties all over the island.  Some places didn't have very good address numbering as I recall!   Have fun with your new tool!

I guess I am behind the times since I do not have one in my car - even my daughter has one!

Nestor loves his GPS. It came with his car when he bought it. Funny, it did not come with my Mercedes though. I don't drive enough to warrant having to learn something else and the google maps on the iphone work great too. Katerina

Georgina, I have a love / hate relationship with mine. The other day in super crazy downtown Atlanta traffic it told me to take the next Tennessee expressway exit....&*%^$#@*

GPS helps. Doesn't matter that you know your city. You can still get lost
