- "ahinahina" is a protected and monitored plant
- part of the aster family
- succulent leaves covered in velvety fine silver hairs
- lives only here at Haleakala Maui
- usually flowers July through October and can be 6' tall
Haleakala Crater - Sliding Sands Trail
- round trip 11 mile trek is fairly strenuous
- bring plenty of water and snacks
- there's no shade, bring a hat and sunscreen
- the trail is sandy with loose rock
Directions: From Kahului, take Hwy 36 to the 37 and 377 (Haleakala Hwy), which leads inland into Maui’s Upcountry region. About 0.5 mile beyond Kula Lodge, turn right onto the winding 378 (Haleakala Crater Rd) to the Park entrance. Beyond Park headquarters, Crater Rd switch-backs up the volcano to Haleakala visitor center.

Love revisiting some favorite Hawaii haunts with you! Always loved the silversword and actually photographed it on the Big Island on Mauna Kea. Of course I had to wear a jacket!

My trip to Haleakala was one of the most unforgettable parts of my vacation in Hawaii. Never had I seen anything like watching the sunrise atop Haleakala.

It certainly is an eye-opening experience to see the sunrise up there! Been there done, that and I prefer the afternoon warmth.
