Maui north shore gets first winter swell of 2010 - 30 foot waves
It's that time of year again... big wave season in Hawaii. The night of November 1 brought the first big swell of the winter season to Maui's north shore. We could hear the giant waves crashing on shore, all night long. By early morning the hard core tow-in surfers were in place at JAWS with their jet skis and boards. Hookipa Beach Park was closed out to surfers - too dangerous!
The air along the north shore was filled with salt spray, almost like a fog! Traffic coming into the little beach town of Paia was crazy, with everyone wanting a look at the giant surf. They weren't dissappointed. I only had time to do a quick drive by of the waves as I had other appointments, but did see some huge rollers hit the shore.
This is what makes the north shore of Maui so exciting... big wave action and the daring people who live for this! If you ever get a chance to see it, you will never forget the power in these waves!

Georgina, That is some pretty serious waves. Hope they calm down for you soon.
30 foot waves? How hight are tsunami waves? That seems awfully high.
That is scary.... you should see the little tinsy pitiful waves that come onto Galveston Beach....You would laugh like crazy!
LOL, Georgina. This reminds me of the last time I was in Maui and there was a young surfer sitting next to me at a breakfast bar. Trying to make conversation with him, I asked him where was the best place to surf around Maui. He quipped, "Where the waves are."
I heard we had big surf here, but didn't get a chance to check out the waves.
Howdy and morning to you Georgina
Georgina, when one sees the winter swells, they sure won't ever forget them! As you said, and the power of them sure does make them mighty exciting to see them. They sure are a blast to ride. That's for sure!
Have a good one

I'll bet the surfers were having a field day with 30 foot waves. I remember seeing a surfing competition when I was in Hawaii and those guys and gals are nuts!
I cannot even imagine what a 30 foot wave looks like! We get such baby waves here on the Gulf Coast!
Hi Georgie! I would SO love to see 30 foot waves! How powerfully exciting it must be...
In Hawaiian measurements it would be 15ft - from the centerline up. In today's measurements, it's from the bottom of the trough to the top of the crest, making the waves twice as high. However you call it, they are tremendous beasts of power!
Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them!
Gabe - you and me both - I know enough to stay away from the water when the waves are big like this!
Sounds like time to wax up the board and take a ride.
