Wailuku Maui HI - First Friday celebrations - First Friday of 2011

Here on Maui there is a monthly event called Wailuku First Fridays, which takes place on the first Friday of every month.  This January 7th marks the first First Friday for 2011 and a lot of special happenings are in store.  It all happens in the old part of Wailuku, centered on N. Market street by the old historic Iao Theater.  Shops and restaurants offer specials, and there's usually some live music or entertainment.  It's open to the public and there's no entry fee, just show up. This is what's happening tonight: (from the Maui News online)

NEW FIRST FRIDAY IN WAILUKU WITH MOTH

Start the new year right with Wailuku First Friday, the monthly block party on the island that packs food and entertainment into walking distance in Central Maui. Market Street will close from 6 to 8 p.m. to celebrate 13 years of Maui Time Weekly with a live performance by local band Moth at the Maui Thing Stage. Additional live music will include Gene and Shea Argel at Cafe O'Lei at 5; Head High will play at the Wailuku Banyan Tree Park at 6; and high school band Visibly Shaken will perform at 6 p.m. at the Main Street Promenade. "Ho'okele Wa'a Turning the Canoe - Navigating a Sustainable Future for Maui and the World" will screen at 7:30 pm at the Historic Iao Theater; entry is free, donations will be accepted. A poetry slam at Gallery Ha will start at 8 p.m. For details, 878-1888.

If you're not doing anything on Maui tonight, why not check out the scene in Old Wailuku.  Maybe I'll see you there?  We plan on going out for dinner in Wailuku at the Saigon Cafe which is just around the corner.

You'd think I would have some pictures of Old Wailuku, but I must have left them in my other computer!  I guess that's something else to put on my list of things to do in 2011.

Georgina, I'm going to be on the plane with Juli!  Winter in Florida is beginning to get too cool for me... I think next year I'll make the trip to Hawaii and you are certainly making the idea sound more and more enticing!

Georgina - I have to agree with Silvia, it sounds like the place to be! Although today was up in the 60s, last month was just way too cold for my taste!
