Maui Blog - Georgina M. Hunter R(S): visiting Haleakala National Park on Maui

visiting Haleakala National Park on Maui

 Haleakala National Park

The dominant geological feature of East Maui is the dormant volcano known as Haleakala, rising over 10,000 ft above sea level.  Weather at the summit is ever changing and unpredictable.  High winds are not uncommon at this elevation.  Winter or summer, you are as likely to experience rain as sun, and temperatures can be in the 60's... or below zero. Sometimes on the same day! Recently, we had snow at the summit.  Snow on Maui!  It’s truly a magical place.

Trails are plentiful and always available! You can take the half mile Pa Ka'oao Trail to the top of a cinder cone for a different view or you might choose to explore a section of the long Keoneke 'ehe'e (Sliding Sands) Trail which begins near the entrance to the main parking lot.  Whichever you choose, you must stay on the trail as you hike through the habitat of many rare and endangered species.

Hikers must be prepared for all possible weather conditions in Haleakala National Park.  Be sure you have plenty of water and protection from the sun. Stop by a visitor center for a trail map and advice on how to choose from among the 35+ miles (56+ km) of trails available in the park. Toilets are available 24 hours per day at both visitor centers.

Be safe and have fun while at the summit, and don’t forget your camera!

Hi Georgina...I must admit that when we took our three children there years ago we were so in love with the beach we never made it to the park.  We were living in Ohio at the time and couldn't get enough of the water and sand.

Next time I'll take a good look at the park.  Promise.

I remember climbing Haleakala very early one morning to watch the sunrise.  A favorite with tourists.  Of course it was with a bus and not on foot.

Aloha GEORGINA:

What a Gorgeous Blog and very educational for people not familiar with Maui. My father's birthplace, Makawao, is located on one of the sides of Mt. Haleakala. If I remember correctly, it is about halfway up the side. The silver sword is so amazing. So few people realize this dormant volcano is 10,000 ft. You do a fabulous job of explaining and showing all the wonders of Maui !!!  So many visitors to Hawaii, just stay on the beaches and don't realize how fabulous Mt. Haleakala and upcountry Maui is.

Mahalo,

MYRNA :) :) :)

Our nation has so many wonderful national parks! I have never visited one that had a volcano in it though!

Hi Georgina, I wanted to pay you a visit and boy am I glad that I did.  It is very late for me and I can't stay up much longer, but, I will come back and watch the videos that you have provided on this great post.  We have been to Maui three times and loved every visit. The most wonderful week of my entire life was spent on Maui for our 30th wedding anniversary.  I love your pictures on your blog and profile and have added you as an associate and will also Subscribe to your blog.  I look forward to seeing more of your work and mahalo nui loa.
