Aftereffects of the Maui tsunami of March 11 2011 - video

Thank you everyone for your concern about us here on Maui.  We are all fine and suffered very little damage when compared to the people in Japan.  When I looked for videos on YouTube about tsunami damage on Maui I came across this one which I think really gives a great account of the flooding aftereffects.  It's an aerial view from a helicopter the day after the surges came ashore.  I was surprised at the extent of flooding since where we live is far removed from all of that.  I expect as more reports come in we will get a better idea.  Mostly the low lying areas in Kihei, Kahului and Lahaina were affected by flood waters.  The picture below is taken on the north shore where we are used to getting battered by high surf.

I'm happy to say that things were handled calmly and properly here thanks to our Civil Defense and police personnel.  We take this kind of thing seriously as we have seen first hand what can happen when tsunamis strike.  You can sign up for email alerts for emergencies like this in Hawaii.

Hey Georgina, glad to hear you're OK. While there were definitely some areas with significant damage, it appears the situation could have been a lot worse if the local authorities weren't as experienced in the proper handling of tsunamis as they appear to be.

Hi Georgina...I'm happy to learn that you are fine.  What happened in Japan is so hard to imagine.  There are so many unexpected events taking place, some initiated by man and others by Mother Nature.  How little control we have at times.

Thanks for checking out the video and being concerned.  We are still finding more damage as time goes by, but honestly I don't know how we can complain when compared to the devastation in Japan.  It could have been so much worse here than it was.
