The cost of a residential building permit on Maui is based on the estimated cost to build the home, not on the square footage. You can find a lot of good info on the Maui County website, including a fee schedule which tells you how to estimate the cost of your permit.
Or, call a builder on Maui who will tell you that to build a typical 2,000 sf home it will probably cost you about $2,300-$2,400 for your building permit, electrical permit, and plumbing permit. Expect the permitting process to take about 90 days at this time, or less if you are very prepared and organized.
I recommend using an experienced builder or contractor to deal with the permitting as it can be difficult and lengthy for first timers.

Jon - that would depend on a lot of factors, but let's just say somewhere between $150-300/sf. or more of course.
Georgina - you know, I have no idea what that cost would be here.....something I should perhaps check out!
