Downhill biking is a fun activity for visitors to Maui. There are many companies offering the service which drives you up Haleakala in a van, rigs you up with a bike and helmet, and then guide you down the 10,000 ft high mountain in a group.
Haleakala National Park is usually where the downhill riding begins. The tour can include a trip into the crater or you can just start zooming downhill and never mind the side trip to see the park. For real hard core enthusiasts, a sunrise tour will get you up to the crater before the sun rises, so you can experience the magical beauty of seeing the sun come up over the rim of the crater.
Haleakala Bike Co. offers a variety of tours, and will also let you just rent the bike and equipment to do your own self guided tour or a a day trip. They are located at the Haiku Marketplace which is only a short drive from the beach town of Paia Maui. With over 15 years of safe biking on Maui, you can count on good service and a unique Maui experience.

Georgina, I did this trip that last time I was in Maui. It's amazing how a "downhill" bike trip can be taxing if one's not in good shape. I didn't have my camera with me - how stupid - and sure with I had. The views were absolutely amazing, especially as the sun came up. So, I recommend anyone taking the downhill bike trip in Maui - take that camera!!!
The sunrise at Haleakala is an awe inspiring experience. When the kids get a bit older the bike ride down will be a must.
I know now where to look for a bike

Juli - good advice for any Maui activity!
Doug - what a great family outing!
Steve - I think you already knew.
Thanks for the comments.
I haven't owned a bike in YEARS but do remember fun times biking around Lake Constance in Southern Germany YEARS ago - a day out on a bike, with a picnic lunch packed, can be a lot of fun!
Barb - I can't believe you don't have a bike! It's so flat in Florida that a bike would be a great way to get around.
