Maui Blog - Georgie Hunter R(S): Cloning ourselves on ActiveRain - what's the word?

Cloning ourselves on ActiveRain - what's the word?

2 heads are better than one

I see that we can join up more than once, and essentially be "cloned" here on ActiveRain.  In my area I see a few people doing this and it doesn't seem to hurt as a way of marketing yourself.  I was just wondering what is the feedback on this practice?  What do the AR gods have to say?

I can see the Localism advantage of being at the top of the stack for more than one town.  Why not be perceived as an expert in two or more areas, especially if they are geographically close, and it's all part of your "territory"?

Are any of you doing this?  What are your thoughts?

If 2 heads are better than 1, would 3 heads be even better?  Where do you draw the line?

This example of duplicate listings is not to be confused with duplicate MLS listings, which was another topic I brought up.

Thanks in advance for thinking about this and responding.

Georgina, of course I can only speak for myself.  I do not agree with the practice simply because common sense dictates that it would be difficult to post original content on each profile.  That would dilute the quality of the content on Active Rain.  That being said, however, if a person has 2 (or 3 or 4) profiles and wants to knock themselves out writing quality, original posts for each, I say, more power to them.  I have one profile and find it hard to keep up with. =)

I agree that there will be some duplicating content....and therefore trying to game the system... Otherwise, like Maggie said...if it's quality content on each...knock themselves out.  Why aren't they just posting to Maui county and not cities anyway?  I gotta go look at this.

I've asked "ActiveRain" about this issue and they say that it is frowned upon

Okay, thanks for the responses.   I too think it's kind of hokey, but if everyone else was doing it.....

I am not aware that anyone else is doing it, but I like the comment by Sally above here,  to just work on an county and not cities. I live in an area of five cities that run into each other ...I push Lake County but I am Listed as Leesburg, Fl..MMMMMMMM no, I don't have time for more than one of me if I have to do the work of both!!!

Mike - they do it here on Maui.  some just plain clone themselves, and some are more creative.  Maybe it's just another way of competing with oneself.   hahaha

I think it is a good exercise for us to have to identify our city when we sign up for ActiveRain, and we have some flexibility.  For example, we could use our office location or our home location.  Localism posts can be made on a county level.  If I noticed that someone was commenting on their own posts, to game the system, or duplicating posts under two identities, I would lose all respect for them.

I have been told from someone who had contacted AR about multiple accounts, they said there is no policy against it.  You just have to have a different login.

Here is a scenario, a brokerage has multiple areas they do business.  I will use myself, my brokerage specialises in 3 different areas of real estate.  We do residential, mortgages, and commercial.  As far as I know we are allowed to have a login for each real estate area.  I primarily use this account.

Having an account for each area does provide different visibility on the web.  If it is not allowed, I would like to know.  I do not want to break any rules, but I have an email saying it is okay from another member.

Ernie - I didn't realize you were doing it too.  How's that working out?  Now you have to make 3 blogs?   Do you ever suffer from an identity crisis?  : )

I don't see having more then one profile a bonus. I can't type enough to keep up with one. I work the whole island, tomorrow is Lahaina. Yet Wailuku and Kahului is my area of expertise. I suppose it is up to the individual in charge. Between all my other duties, active rain is low on the must do list. I rather be with animals or guitars.

Jeff - I know what you mean.  Who's got time to be doing double duty on here?

You know what would be really lame?  To clone yourself, then invite yourself to join so you can get more points added for your clone's activity.  Imagine if we all did that!  lol

I hope you have a good time over on "the other side", and write 'em up.
