When you're driving around Maui, in Haiku, you'll sooner or later find yourself driving the twisting mountain spine of Kaupakalua Road, the main artery between the upcountry town of Makawao, and the Hana Highway starting point of the historic Millenium Trail. Going up or down, there aren't many pit stops along the way, and it's really great to come across Hanzawa's, an old fashioned country store.
Hanzawa's Store serves a large community of people in the countryside, from Haiku to Makawao. It's the only gas station and store for miles around. Is it any wonder they do a thriving business, selling gas, hot dogs and cold drinks, beer, milk and ice cream, groceries and local produce? It's a country store with everything you need, including household goods and blue jeans. You can even get feed for your animals. They're open most days, but they close pretty early so don't expect to find them open after 6. You can call them at 808 572-8337. I don't think they have a website, but they are located at 1833 Kaupakalua Road, Haiku Maui 96708.
Other highlights in this part of upcountry Maui are Herman's junk yard where you can find some spare parts for your Maui cruiser, and DeCoite's packing house, where you take your beef to be killed and processed.

Need to gas up and go holo holo Maui? Heading out to Twin Falls for a swim in the jungle? Don't forget to stop in at Hanzawa's. See you on the road.

Aloha Georgina!
Any chance you know what Kaupakalua means?
I just moved onto K. and have not been able to find the meaning yet.
