The Skystream newsletter has a link to an interesting story today.... former president George Bush has installed a 33 foot tall windmill to generate electricity at his oceanfront summer home in Walker's Point, Maine. This should help others to realize that wind power is a great thing.
A Skystream 3.7 model can produce an estimated 400 kilowatts a month at a wind speed of 12 mph. An average household uses about 600 kilowatts a month. The wind turbine connects to the utility grid, and when it does not produce enough electricity, a home will start drawing electricity from its power company. If the turbine produces excess energy, the excess will feed into the grid and the homeowner will receive credits from the power company.
You can learn more about wind power at the Southwest Windpower website or the Bergey website. I encourage everyone to give it a try if you're able.
Here's a picture of our Bergey wind turbine spinning away in Haiku. We are really using the wind power today, as it's blowing up a big storm here on Maui. Some parts of the island are already without power due to trees knocking down the lines. At least I am still powered up! Being off grid has its advantages.
Are you looking for an off the grid property on Maui? If you have any questions about Maui off grid living, I would be happy to help.

Great! Georgie , the only concern i have with windpower is that not everyone can place it on its property . Community Asso. are not really happy to see them in developments .
But keep in mind I am all for Wind Power , feel free to read my Site . I will try to read more about wind power. Thanks for writing this Blog . Georg Thoma
Eric - I have ceased wondering why W does anything he does. I will be so glad to see a new president, and hope it will be one for the better.
Georg - It's a shame about communities with too many rules and regulations. We are lucky to live in the country in a neighborhood where "anything goes". Maybe when the realities of the true cost of power hit home, things might change. Here in Hawaii we have very expensive electric power, so it's more feasible.
thanks for your comments
Mary - how's it going with the new dealership? Will you be coming to the islands next year?
Ron - you know what they say - it's easier to get forgiven than to get permission, or something like that
We don't need no stinkin permits .... lol
Um, Eric, it's obvious you need to do a little research on the President's "Texas White House" near Crawford, Texas, which a 2001 Chicago Tribune article described as, "a model of environmental rectitude".
Here's an article describing all its eco-friendly features, with several sources referenced at the bottom of the article http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/house.asp
Georgina,
It's about time that one of these Bush people get it right. There are many opportunities now to do the right thing for the global benefit and the current administration is just on its hands. As usual.
