purple wild orchid on Maui

This is one of the native wild orchids that grows by the roadsides in Haiku Maui.  It's only a small plant and before it flowers you would hardly notice it as there are only a few long leaves.  They say that if these orchids can be found it must be a healthy ecosystem as they are very sensitive.

Cultivated orchids are big business on Maui and you can find many retail stores selling a huge variety.  I like to visit the nurseries where they grow them since they are very knowledgable about which type will do best in your area.  Maui has a lot of microclimates and there are orchids suited for each district.

If you live in Haiku you might consider shopping for orchids at these nurseries:

Georgina, my father in-law used to raise orchids, showed and won many awards for them.  I know how difficult it is getting them to bloom.  He brought back an orchid from Hawaii years ago and it took my wife 7 years getting it to bloom.  I totally agree with your statement about how sensitive they are.

Hi Georgina, I have never seen wild orchids before they are beautiful. I hope to see them in person when I visit Hawaii next year.
