Thankful for lau laus - little bundles of goodness on a Hawaiian table

lau lau cooking in the pot

Lau laus are so simple - some meat, some leaves, some salt, all wrapped up in ti leaves and steamed for hours.  I always forget to take pictures when I'm making them because I get so wrapped up in it.

Lau is Hawaiian for leaf, thus lau lau means leaf leaf because of the leaves inside the leaves.

There are many variations on the lau lau recipe, and they are all good!

Add some Molokai sweet potatoes, and garden salad, and you have a complete and healthy meal.  You'll find lau laus on the menu when you go to a Hawaiian luau, or local restaurant in Hawaii.  If you live here on Maui you can make your own.  Make a whole bunch at once and it's the start of a party.

The lau laus sounds delicious. I have never have had any but I would welcome the opportunity to eat some.

I haven't seen or heard of these before.  I guess I need to plan a trip to the island.
