Maui FirstLight: Academy screenings on Maui. 2012 season underway

The Maui Film Festival is a wonderful thing that has been growing steadily for a number of years.  In the summer they focus their films in the Wailea area, as well as at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.  In the holiday season it's called FirstLight and this year is already underway at the MACC.  This is the 14th year for Maui to be treated to first run cinema offerings.

Barry Rivers is the man behind the Maui Film Festival and FirstLight and he hand picks some of the best films from Hollywood and around the world.  The 2012 schedule features 40 films, many of which are special encores and premieres.  Spread out over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, all FirstLight films offer live music, dinner and drinks, desserts and coffee in the CandleLight Cafe outside the theater.  It can make for a really fun evening and a great date night.

Here's a sample of what you can see this year:

  • Spirit 2 Power
  • Brooklyn Castle
  • Samsara
  • Anna Karenina
  • Moonrise Kingdom
  • Starlet
  • 28 Hotel Rooms
  • Any Day Now
  • Cowboys and Aerials (a local surfing movie)
  • The Master
  • The Intouchables
  • Lincoln
  • Argo
  • Love Marilyn
  • Silver Linings
Every year I wish to see all of the films, but of course that never happens.  Maybe 1 or 2 will suffice.

You can check out the Maui Film Festival on Facebook or at their own website.
