Snow tops Haleakala Mountain on Maui
We got some snow on Maui! And it stayed more than one day this time. On average, we get snow on Maui about every 5 years or so. This time it was quite a lot of snow coverage, much more than the usual dusting. This great shot is by Giampaolo Cammarota, taken from upcountry Kula Maui.
The Maui News reports that the road to the 10,000 ft summit of Haleakala was closed above the 7,000 foot elevation before dawn Monday due to unsafe driving conditions... high winds and ice. The road was reopened after 11 a.m. on Monday once it was safe to drive. The road was closed again today too, so no need trying to go up and make a snowman! It feels like it might snow again tonight up at the higher elevations.
Haleakala National Park is the crown jewel atop the mountain here, and a trip to this sacred Hawaiian place is an unforgettable experience . If you're visiting Maui, ithis is on the top 10 list of things to do. You can get there by car, by bicycle, or by foot, or you can visit the park on a commercial tour bus. If you're really fit, you can even run up there with the Valley Isle Road Runners on Saturday March 15th 2008, in the Run to the Sun. Take some warm clothes or blankets when you go up!

The snow won't last long and it will be gone, and the bus tours and bike tours will resume their trips through Kula Maui. People will go back to their jobs in the Park, and at Science City.
Meanwhile back at the beach... it's warm and sunny and the wave froth washes over your bare feet, cold drink in hand. Business as usual in the resorts. Good news for property owners.
Maui has a lot to offer. There's something for everyone. Do you have any questions about living on Maui?

WOW!
You have now and us here in Indiana has tornadoes. Crazy, crazy weather.
Happy Selling!

Georgina, It seems very weird to see the foliage and snow in the same photo and then read about days at the beach!! Spectacular looking mountain. I suppose one gets used to seeing it all.
These are beautiful shots Georgina - Of course we are deluged with snow and extremely cold weather here in Canada right now. perhaps this same Arctic weather is affecting some southerly points a bit as well.
So I'm sure you'd not be missing BC??
Tony - The Big Island gets even more snow than us, as Mauna Kea is over 13,000 feet high.
Charles - Maui weddings have become a big business now, especially for the Japanese market.
Tom - It's always a nice surprise to see it!
Renee - Can I ship you over some rain?
BJ - Not my photo this time.
Karen - There are so many micro-climates on this one island, that you can find what you're looking for.
Bill - Yeah it does kinda!
Deborah - I so miss BC - the spring time... all those blossoms, and the rivers.
Carole - People get excited when it happens... some of them have never experienced snow up close.
Here's a picture taken today... zoomed in from sea level, during a brief puka in the clouds. This is the longest time we have had snow stick around. Might have to bust out the cold weather gear and head up for some sport.... lol
Just beautiful, you may actually need to own a jacket if you live on Maui...I would love to go skiing in the morning and surfing in the afternoon.
Gosh - what a stunning shot you've taken here Georgina!
Elaine - that's quite a thought - here in the Okanagan we make the boast of being able to golf, ski, ...and perhaps go boating all on the same day!
Elaine - just don't try and go scuba diving and skiing in the same day... too much altitude differential
Deborah - that's how far away I like my snow, unless I have skis on.
Georgina...Snow!!! What next???
Absolutely love the photo of the footprint in the sand. Great Shot indeed.
Cheers,
Kathleen
Kathleen - I was just kidding about the notes. Still haven't cracked a book yet either.
Benjamin - It doesn't always snow..... it hardly ever snows. I doubt if we'll see any more now.
Georgina, That's how I like snow - in a picture.
Bill Roberts
Lisa - It gets cold up top, but down at the beaches it's usually in the 80's, the 70's would be "cold".
Debra - thanks for coming by. here's a green eyed monster for you...
