Some pictures of plants and flowers from around here to brighten your day - Aloha from Maui County - Hawaii
Those pink fuzzy ones are Protea Kings, and the spiky ones are pincushions. These were grown in upcountry Maui, in Kula on the slopes of Haleakala - the dormant volcano.
This is Lobster Claw Heliconia - in the same family as bananas. This flower is about 15" tall. The leaves are over 6' long.
They grow very well in Haiku Maui, HI, on the windward side.
Ti leaves are abundant all over the island, but especially in the wetter areas. This colorful variety brightens up a Haiku garden. Ti leaves have many traditional uses and you can never have too many plants.
Torch Ginger flowers come in Red, Pink and White, and they are larger than their relative the edible ginger root. They like a lush tropical climate with plenty of rain.
This is my papaya tree growing down in the garden by the stream. It was grown from a seed that came out of a huge papaya.

oh my gawd!! How exquisitely breath-taking these shots are of the protea pincushions - and lobster claw! I've never seen ginger flower before - is this like the plant we get ginger root from?
You have your own papaya tree???!! How awesome - I just got in from a walk on which I picked up and carried home in hand - a Caribbean papaya. I've seen them in Cuba. Are yours the large ones? They look so beautiful!

Frank - I love the smell of the white or yellow gingers - but they are actually a "weed" in some areas in Hawaii....they grow so easily. How nice to walk around on rose petals!

Deborah - Glad you liked the pictures. Yes, the pink ginger is related to edible ginger. they have the same kind of root and leave structures, but these are much larger. We have some edible ginger growing in a flower pot. These papayas are about the size of a acorn squash. Papayas come in all sizes and shapes, but the marketable ones are usually the single serving ones we are all familiar with. I have seen "family size" ones that weigh about 10 pounds though.... but imagine trying to eat all that?

The papayas I get here are from Belize - around 2.5 lbs each - a nice size and very yummy. I know those really huge ones likely wouldn't ship and keep well.
I think I may try growing ginger in a pot - always wanted to try that.
