What do I do with my trash on Maui, once I own a Maui home?
New Maui homeowners need to know what they can do with their trash. Basically you have these options:
Leave it at the curb... You can arrange to have curbside refuse pick up by calling 808 270-7452. Once you open an account and let them know your new address, they will tell you what day the trash will be picked up. If you're in an area serviced by the automatic trucks, you'll get one large can and they'll come twice a week to empty it. If you don't get the large automated containers you are allowed 6 regular sized garbage cans per property, and pick up is just once a week.
Take it to the dump... The Central Maui Landfill can be found off Pulehu Road, on the outskirts of Kahului. They are open from 6 am to 3 pm and closed on Sundays. No charge for household trash and greenwaste like yard debris. Call them at (808) 270-6153.
Recycle it... Many things can be recycled by taking them to drop off locations. This includes cardboard, newspapers, glass and some plastics. Beverage containers are redeemable for cash at the redemption centers. There is no curbside recycling for most of Maui yet, but some neighborhoods in South Maui are trying out the new 3-Can Plan. There's also the option of a private recycling curbside service!
