Buying a home on Maui - what's the elevation at this property?

When buying and selling homes or land on Maui, one of the questions that comes up quite often is something like this... "What's the elevation here?".  Because Maui real estate can be anywhere between sea level or 4,000' it's a good question.

Even oceanfront homes aren't always at sea level.  Along the north shore there are cliffs that drop a couple of hundred feet straight down to the water.  How high is high enough to be safe from a tsunami, anyway?

The range of altitude is significant in some areas so it's good to know just where you stand.  Haiku goes from sea level to around 1,600'.  That can make a big difference in climate and comfort zone.  The upcountry area also has a lot of variation, especially in Kula.

I have a couple of apps on my iPhone to help when asked this question.

ExploreMore is a good app that allows you to snap a picture of the property and it pastes the elevation and town name right on the picture.  No need to remember the elevation, as you'll have a record of it along with a picture of the house.  Email that to yourclients.  Too bad the picture is just black and white, but what do want for nothing?

Altimeter+ is another app that will give you a couple of choices: Aster or GPS.  Don't really know what it means but I can get a pretty good idea of the elevation by checking both.  This app also supplies the map coordinates, which might be useful.  It's just 99 cents.

So don't be caught without the right app for your elevation needs!

I am sure that a little altitude is a strong positive on those extra warm tropical days.  So cool to have apps like these to keep a record along with the pic of the property.

Good to have. There doesn't seem to be anything similar for Android/Microsoft/Google
