Maui Blog - Georgie Hunter R(S): A stinky mouse showed up at my showing today

A stinky mouse showed up at my showing today

dead ratA stinky mouse showed up at my showing today and the kitchen pantry smelled really ripe. The caretakers alerted me of it last night and by this morning there was no denying it!  There was a lot of smell, but no dead mouse or rat to be found. This is NOT what you want to happen when you're showing an expensive country property. We burned incense which helped a bit.

I consulted with the buyer's agent and we decided to forge ahead as scheduled. The buyer is on island and his mission is to find a suitable property, the sooner the better. They showed up and there was lots to see before arriving in the kitchen. Lucky for us it was a beautiful day so all the windows and doors were open and the gentle trade winds were circulating the air. It would have been much worse if it was rainy and damp.  Everyone had a laugh about it and blamed the lazy cat!

Will this be a deal killer?  I sure hope not. The buyers had a list of other homes on Maui to see, but they might be back for another showing, and when that happens there had better not be any more mice!

Georgie,

Some people can see past it, and I hope these folks do.  If they are serious about buying a home, we hope they will.  A

RATS! At least your client took it well Georgie Hunter! Will this make it on TV?

This was unfortunate, but hopefully not a deal killer.  I showed a house eons ago that had bated mouse traps on top of the kitchen counter.  They were there during the showing...it didn't sell.

How rude of that little guy. May he rest in peace.

It is hard to undo a rodent situation, people never quite trust that they are all gone once one is noticed.

Georgie, I may not have held the open house.  That was a tough call.  Smell is a deal killer for so many buyers.

Great story! I had a racoon die in a chimney the day before an open house - of course he had to ripen a bit before we knew he was there! Tough on my sellers - tougher on the racoon!

Good morning Georgie. So I hope the mouse didn't deter the buyers. It might have for me but I am dealing with a dead one in my basement anyway.

Georgie,  Mice are plentiful there. At least they have been every time I've been to Hawaii.  Hopefully the buyers understand that and you find whatever is causing the smell.

Evelyn Johnston I can see why that would be a deal killer!

Paul Henderson No that won't be on a show!

Thanks for all your comments!

Kathleen Daniels Yes they are. We live in the country and it's a constant battle to keep the mice and rats away. Having 3 JRT's helps a lot.

Sheila Anderson I hope you find it soon and get rid of it.

Lise Howe Yuck! That would make a really big stink.

Russ Ravary ~ Metro Detroit Realtor call (248) 310-6239 I would have postponed gladly but the buyer's agent didn't want to. At least he was warned and helped to smooth it over.

Now that is one situation I have never had to face. Sure hope they make an offer!

I'll have to share this with my seller that is concerned about showings while she is away on vacation in case the sugar ants come out...  On second thought, I'll wait until she returns!  It could be worse!

Its really embarrassing.  Those dead mice stink like he**.  As a listing agent I will get the seller to get a exterminator and have them arrange to find that bugger.  And good luck finding the sucker
