Maui Blog - Georgie Hunter R(S): Have you considered off the grid living on Maui?

Have you considered off the grid living on Maui?

With increasing water shortages and power struggles with electric providers, many people are getting fed up with having no control over such basics necessities of life. We kind of take some things for granted when we own a home, such as clean and plentiful water, and a reliable source of power. But what happens when all that becomes unreliable?  Look no further than places like Flint Michigan, or Lake Powell to see that we can't keep on like this.  Shows like Unplugged Nation are letting people know that there are alternatives to what we consider normal housing.

Why not have your own free source of fresh water? Water catchment systems work great in areas with high rainfall and clean air.  Here on the north shore of Maui many people rely on sweet rainwater for their household needs since it just falls out of the sky after coming over thousands of miles of ocean.  With a good covered holding tank you won't even need to add chlorine or other chemicals.

Do you want to have more control over your power supply and use more renewable sources such as solar power and wind?  It can happen when you live off the grid and have your own electrical system by using photo-voltaic panels and batteries to store the energy.  Wind turbines are also a reality than can combine with solar to provide incoming power both day and night. You won't have any more power failures or brown-outs unless you fail to maintain your own system.  Being independent is a really good feeling of security.

Off-grid living doesn't mean you have to do without what you're used to.  You can have a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, and other appliances. A swimming pool - sure, why not?  It's just a matter of scaling up the system to supply your needs.  Once you consult with an off the grid supplier you'll know what it takes to keep you powered up in style. Luxury homes  and humble cottages can all be completely self sustaining.

WE have people live a few miles on the mountain with a great view. Other than electricity and private well they can not get phone or wireless service.  With satellite internet now they have phone service.   Before they drive a few miles going to a phone booth which has been vandalized. If you are Mr Goodman why not? If not I pass.

I've never been to any of the islands.  That would definately be off my grid.

I like the idea of being "off grid" and do spend a good share of my time camped out either in our off grid office or in a camper in some far off forest.

Good morning Georgie. This is really neat. I live in western Massachusetts and in NY State and in Vermont there are big time water problems with contamination. Great post.

Off the grid living is not for everyone, but I think it is a wonderful way to live and contribute to the health of the planet.
