The long awaited new Airport Access Road has opened in Kahului Maui and it's ready for business, as of July 23, 2016. This makes it a lot easier to get to the airport, no matter what part of the island you're coming from, but especially from the north shore and upcountry, it will be the first road on your right as you approach Kahului. If you're coming from south or west Maui, it's get's a little different where Kuihelani Hwy meets Dairy Road, near the Harley Davidson shop. That's where it veers off and becomes the Airport Access Road.
They're still working out the signage though, so it helps if you know your way around on the previous roads, otherwise it could be a little confusing.
Watch this short video to get an idea of how it looks now. It's very attractive with the palm trees and the waterfall feature, which is a creative way of having water storage nearby. These improvements really enhance the visitor experience.
You drive directly up to the terminal with the depature gates, but watch out for merging traffic on the left. These are the cars and vans that may be circling the terminal... which is now a bit of a longer route, so try to avoid this action. The "cell phone" waiting lot is where the rental car lots are, towards Kanaha Beach.
So we now have an overpass (the access road itself) and underpass (leaving Costco and heading to north shore), but unfortunately it's not at the Hana Highway where it's really needed. There are 2 new traffic intersections when coming from Haleakala Hwy into Kahului... Hookele Rd which goes into the Kahului Business Park, and The Airport Access Road. Google Maps, take note.
In the future all the rental cars will be housed in a tall parking structure near the airport, serviced by shuttle vans. You can see the cranes working on it already. Paid for with fees received from all those car rentals over the years! It will be a dominant part of the landscape when completed and will make the Kahului Airport look like so many other places. : (
A few pictures of when they were building the access road, showing the new entrance to the final stretch from Hana Highway, where there's now a traffic signal.
Confused? Don't be. Maybe you need to find a home for sale in Kahului or Wailuku.
