Maui Blog - Georgie Hunter R(S): Have you ever tried goat milk ice cream?

Have you ever tried goat milk ice cream?

I've always wondered why there's no goat milk ice cream.  You know, some people can't tolerate cow milk, but sheep or goat milk is usually fine.  Well today I found a vendor at the Upcountry Farmer's Market in Pukalani Maui who was selling goat ice cream!  They make it themselves at Haleakala Creamery, a boutique farm in Kula Maui.  Caramel sauce is their primary product.

Of course I had to taste it to see if it was just a little goaty tasting, haha.  But it was no goaty, and it was just like "normal" ice cream. So don't be scared to try some goat ice cream if you get a chance, and especially if you're lactose intolerant.

Not a good time to be buying it on a hot Saturday morning with other chores to attend to, but it will soon be available at local stores such as Mana Foods in Paia, where I like to shop.  I'll be looking for it, to help support our local Maui farmers.

Georgie, just sold a home on 4 acres where the buyers plan to buy some goats.  They love their milk, and never thought of ice cream!

Yes, I have and it is extremely rich and one doesn't need two scoops for the ice cream fix. So many great cottage industries in your beautiful World!

I had never thought of that. And it makes sense. I would imagine goat cheese ice cream tastes a little creamier, no?

Hi Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089, I didn't know that goats milk is more easily digested by those who are lactose intolerant. I love cheese made from goats milk and if I can find goats milk ice cream here in the valley I'm going to have to give it a try!

Nancy Laswick Yes the lactose intolerance only applies to cow milk, so sheep or goat or other milk won't have the same effect.  I suppose there are also people who can't tolerate those milks either, but in the case of my hubby it's just the cow milk... and funny enough the butter has no effect.
