Maui Blog - Georgie Hunter R(S): Maui's first medical marijuana dispensary finally opens!

Maui's first medical marijuana dispensary finally opens!

Maui's first medical marijuana dispensary finally opens!

It's been 17 years since medical marijuana has been legal in the state of Hawaii, and the first dispensary has now been green-lighted to open the doors and sell product to patients.  Two outlets have been licensed to sell cannabis products on the island of Maui, and Maui Grown Therapies has passed all inspections and requirements to offer the dried flower buds for sale.  Other related products are still waiting for the thumb's up from the Hawaii Department of Health.

This week they'll handle patients with appointments only, and starting August 14 they'll take walk-in customers.  Business hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Saturday.  They are located at 44 Paa St., in Kahului, in the Maui Lani Village Center.  Fred Rickert of Lahaina Maui was the first customer to buy pot yesterday around noon.

Call them at (808) 866-7576

From their website I learned they are green in more ways than one..

" Its Upcountry production center is powered by a solar microgrid featuring a full array of photovoltaic panels and lithium ion battery storage banks capable of storing 1 MW of electricity. MGT also reuses its irrigation water by recapturing and filtering atmospheric condensate in its climate control system."

There are 8 licensed dispensaries in Hawaii, with 2 on Maui.  Hawaii dispensaries had been ready to sell the medicine, but were unable to open their doors until the State certified the laboratories designated for testing the product's purity and potency.  Steep Hill Hawaii (laboratory) is still working out certification for related products like lotions, oils and edibles.

Hawaii has around 18,000 registered patients who seek this alternative to traditional medicine.  Residents of Hawaii will now be able to get the relief they need, but what about visitors?  Nobody answered the call I made so I'll be updating this post when I find out.

I just watched the news a few days ago about a little girl whose only hope to live is medicinal, cannibis. So far, it's working, no seizures and she's resuming normal life! I can't think of a parent out there who wouldn't do anything to have their child live. Times have sure changed, haven't they. This is all so new to us. We need to keep an open mind, especially when it involves medical research.

Hi Georgie,

Arizona finally approved medical MJ a couple of years ago. There has bee a lot of push back. The state is really tight in allowing Rx so as to not see abuse.  We have CA and CO with legalized MJ. Maybe some residents will vacation more in those states. !!!

Georgie, we have "Green huts" everywhere in Denver.   In Anchorage now, and have seen a few too.

We have them on every corner here in L.A. area. Now CA is thinking about opening centers for free heroin. Yep. No kidding.

Update: With all the pent up demand, the store ran out of product in just a few days and they are waiting for more approvals to get the next batch into the hands of patients... who have been very patient so far.

Thanks for all your comments.

Like any new accepted industry coming in from the cold they have issues to deal with, but better to be over regualted than under in this case. We are getting a dispensary right here in Devon as well.

Well, what do you know about that?  I had no idea Hawaii was added to to growing list of states looking to legalize alternative medical treatments.  It will be interesting to see if it is successful and leads legalization in general.. .
