The Pauwela Store is open at the Pauwela Cannery, in Haiku Maui.

If you remember where the video store was (forever) then you know where to find this new little grocery store at the old pineapple cannery that's been converted to commercial and light industrial spaces.  Once upon a time, when pineapple was king on Maui, the Pauwela Cannery was a busy hub of activity where the train came and went, transporting workers and delivering canned pineapples for shipment to the mainland.  I find it hard to believe that we used to have a railroad here on Maui.

The Pauwela Store a small family business that's striving to be mindful of the quality of food they sell, keeping with the organic and local theme.  They'll buy your extra fruits and veggies from you to sell, and you just have to check in with them to see what they're looking for.  Last time I was in they needed avocados and oranges.

They have the usual basic items you'll find in most grocery stores:

  • a cooler with dairy products, ready to eat sandwiches, cold drinks
  • fresh produce from local small farms
  • chips and candy and other snacks
  • canned goods and packaged products
  • flowers!

I love supporting small family businesses like these, and I can see from the picture I would be happy to buy here some of the staples that would be great for my kitchen, needless to say I would not mind paying a premium so I could support them, Endre

This little store is packed with goodies! I love the mom and pop small family business connection to the community. I'll bet this is one of the most important stores for the residents and tourists would be surprised to see how friendly everyone was too. Those shelves look neat and organized with good products too! I also like the entry for this store. I was attracted to a similar store in Montana a couple of weeks ago. I skipped the big store and chose something like this and got everything I wanted and it made me feel at home. I have a feeling, this store you featured is just like that.
