Raising some chickens in Haiku Maui

We got 8 chicks two months ago and I posted some pictures of them here in their cozy starter home.  It seemed so big and roomy back then.

Look at them now!  These 8 hens are soon going to need a bigger house.  We plan to move them into the chicken coop in another month or so once they are big enough to outsmart any mongoose that comes around.  In the meantime they get moved around the backyard enough to keep the grass mowed.

Haiku hens sound so poetic, I love it! Good luck with them and many blessings in 2018 as well!

Endre Barath, Jr. It’s very likely that the eggs are very good on the farm! Love and light!

Georgie, your hens are getting big!   Bet they will enjoy their chicken coop with more room.

Good morning Georgie. I can not relate to this at all but your point is well made.

Endre Barath, Jr. Laura Cerrano the eggs won't be laid until spring.. probably in time for Easter!

Sheila Anderson these are laying hens and they will probably have a longer life than just chickens in the wild.  Dogs, cats and mongoose will prey on the wild ones and their eggs.  Their coop comes with a big yard and it's a pretty good life here on Maui.

So good! They look healthy. Do you let them walk around?

I love the way you live:)

Inna Ivchenko Their cage gets moved around a couple of times a day so they have fresh ground.  We won't let them out of this cage yet since we have 2 small dogs.  The dogs are cool with the old larger hens which are free range, but they have to learn to be nice to these ones since they were just little chicks a few months ago and very tempting for terriers.  Then they move into a larger home with a big yard where they will be safe.  Once they get used to that they will have opportunities to get out late in the day because they will find their way home to roost when the sun goes down.  It's a pretty good life for a laying hen.

Hi Georgie

Wow they have grown. What fun to gave them and hopefully lots of fresh eggs! I think I see a marketing postcard about needing a bigger house in the future!

Hi Georgie, That is great that you have chickens.  Coops that are movable are a wonderful way to go.  Occasionally I see such coops in my travels around my area.  Good for you!
