Maui Blog - Georgie Hunter R(S): Incoming ballistic missile to Hawaii - duck and cover!

Incoming ballistic missile to Hawaii - duck and cover!

We had an alarming wake up alert this morning, from the civil defense warning system here in Hawaii.  They send out text messages to everyone with a cell phone.  So just after 8:00 am all cells phone go crazy with this loud buzzing and alert.... BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

Wow, we thought - turn on the TV and see what the local stations are saying.  It was business as usual on most channels which led us to believe it wasn't that serious. Local stations would be broadcasting an emergency alert if something was really happening, and sure enough there was the ticker tape crawl along the bottom of some channels. So we stayed tuned and searched the Internet for clues (waste of time).  I think it was CNN that interrupted their regular newsprogram to talk about the situation and they already stated it was an error.  Tulsi Gabbard Tweeted that it was a false alarm, but it took over 40 minutes for the civil defense alert stating as much.

 Yield to Incoming traffic!

Yield to INCOMING traffic!

This false alarm really shook some people up, and I've heard some extreme measures were taken.  Why were we so calm?  We were already at home and sheltered with a good supply of food and water.  Even if a missile was coming to Hawaii, we don't expect it to land on Maui.  What can you do anyway?

In any event, it was a big relief to know there was no imminent danger from an air strike.  Maybe this was a good thing as protocols are now being upgraded and things will change for the better.  Read the press release from the Department of Defense here.

With all the North Korea drama going on, Hawaii has resurrected their air strike sirens and there's been a lot of testing of sirens and emergency drills. Just the other day NPR was telling us what to do in the event of an air strike:

  • stay indoors, away from windows
  • if you're driving, pull over and get inside a building
  • if you're outdoors, seek cover or get inside a building
  • be prepared with 14 days of food and water and emergency supplies

And how was your morning?

Georgie, yes it was big news everywhere, clearly your reaction must have been different than others who were thousands of miles away, glad it was a false alarm. Never the less it reminded me of a false alarm fifty plus years ago when the USSR's system went on a fritz and a level headed Russian General did not over react... BTW he died a couple months ago, he would have appreciated this turn of events...Endre

things like this don't happen by accident. I can't but wonder if the government, local, national did this intentionally to monitor itself and the citizens of Hawaii for preparedness. Many lessons to be learned from this. It only goes to show history does repeat itself as these drills have been repeatedly done in the past, during WWII and the early days of the Cold War. We were not prepared for the Japanese then nor our enemies of today.

Georgia,

Yes that would be very scary and I am glad all is ok.

A lot of people took it very seriously and panicked.  I'm glad we've been here long enough to take it with a grain of salt.  We've seen enough false alarms for tsunamis and hurricanes, so sort of skeptical I guess.

Thanks again.

Absolutely terrifying as far as I'm concerned. I would not have known what to do. Being with my family would be my first concern.

Georgie, Thanks for posting your account of how you responded to the false alarm.  Sounds like your calm was a result of being prepared and wanting to gather information.  Glad all is well.

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 - I'm glad you're alright and stayed calm. What else could you do except stay cool, calm, and collected. When I heard about it on my local channel, after they revealed it was a mistake I also thought of you. Let's pray nothing happens like that ever.
