Maui organic gardening...
We are so glad we started a couple of gardens this year, as the weather has been great - lots of sunshine. We could stand a little more rain, but at least there's the hose.
We went away to the mainland for a week, and when we came back the transformation was amazing. Even this past week has shown some incredible growth. The key is to use lots of good organic fertilizers. The bugs don't stand a chance when the plants grow so vigorously.
I just had to brag about my great Haiku garden! This picture only shows half of it... the other half is filled with more tomatoes and about 5 kinds of peppers, including lots of hot ones. I want to start another garden so we always have something coming off.
We are already eating:
- pole beans
- cherry tomatoes
- basil, dill, cilantro, Thai basil
- 6 kinds of lettuce, and other assorted salad greens
- kale, mustard greens
- marigolds (yes, you can put the petals in your salad)

Georgina, I'm glad you're having such a great garden. I've heard stories about insect problems, but it's obvious that you have figured out a way to grow the plants faster than the bugs can attack them. I agree with you about growing vegetables. I mainly have flowers, but I've got tomatoes and zucchini in containers and a couple of volunteer sunflowers are providing me potential seeds. I haven't tried the marigold petals, but I've got some growing and will give them a try.
That is a fine looking garden! Bet you have no deer in Hawaii???

When I was growing up, my grandmother always had a huge garden in her backyard - something fresh to eat year round - I never ate a store bought tomato until after she passed away and they don't compare to picking one right off the plant, washing it and having it with dinner! Great garden, Georgina!
Dave - This year we got lucky. I think the wind helps too - it's a vey windy spot. I'm actually surprised at how well the plants stand up to the strong winds. Yes, the marigolds will brighten up a salad or a plate.
Charles - We have deer, but I've only ever seen one... and we have a Jack Russell that won't let anything come near. Maybe that's why there's no bugs! haha
Lisa - you're right about the tomatoes - I hate buying them as you never know if they will taste like anything.
