ORGANIC GARDENING IN HAIKU MAUI HAWAII
I couldn't resist sharing some of my garden produce with you. This year has been a really good one for gardening in Haiku - plenty of sunshine and lately, enough rainfall to make things grow without watering.
Despite hot weather and the usual bugs, there's still plenty to go around:
- cherry tomatoes
- Kawelo tomatoes
- Hawaii supersweet corn
- broccoli
- cauliflower
- kale
- bell peppers
- Italian relleno peppers
- habanero peppers - 2 kinds!
- Hawaiian chili peppers
- many kinds of lettuce
- mizuna
- herbs
- sugar peas
- pole beans
- Chinese celery
- green onions
- carrots
- cucumbers
- sunflowers

The first corn crop looked like a disaster, due to lack of water, but in the end we had more than a few corn feeds.
The second corn crop has just started to tassel and we expect to have our best crop ever by the end of August.
Growing full size tomatoes is no easy task here in Hawaii - if you don't like to use bug spray. Normally the fruit flies wreak havoc with the tomatoes. I had little faith in them and was pleasantly surprised when they ripened without going all squishy from the little worms inside. Thanks to the U of H for developing a strain that is resistant. ( OMG - they're genetically modified!)

Watch out for these babies - they will add some spice to your life. The nice thing about habanero peppers is that the burn doesn't last long, so it's easier to take. Sure does kick it up a notch when making salsa, fried peppers, stuffed peppers, soups, etc.

Happy gardening to all of you who like to get out there and get your hands dirty.

They look good enough to devour! Thanks Georgina! your local gardens are producing well! Looks like fresh salsa to me!
Those are wonderful healthy looking veges! Colorful to say the least....robust in flavor too.
Those look almost as good as our Arkansas produce. The photos are lovely.
Mary - mmmm salsa!
Sally - I had forgotten just how good a tomato can taste - we've been enjoying the best tomato sandwiches.
Barbara - what's in your garden?
Oh my gosh, ALL of those peppers are from your garden???? Beautiful veggies, that corn is beautiful!!!
I can atest to the quality of the Hunter's cherry tomatoes. Good stuff!
Debbie - those little orange ones are larger than life, and need some respect!
Pete - wait 'til you try the HABS - they are habbening
I'll take a couple tomatoes, I've got my salt and pepper ready. They look fantastic.
Debbie - that's all you need, just some salt and pepper - mmmm Hope your summer is full of juicy fruits and veggies too.
Now that makes me hungry!!! Reminds me of our veggie garden in Germany!!!
Your veggies sure do look better than the local commissary here in AL. Looks like the garden goddesses were on your side this year. I can just taste the freshness and purity from your pictures. I wish I had some pictures to share, however, while on vacation my mini garden did not make it.
Georgina~
Oooooooooooooooooo !!!!! I want to come visit! I love your garden and the energy you have given it to allow your garden to thrive and produce such a beautiful harvest. Thanks for sharing...
BJ - I'm already missing those big tomatoes - now we're onto the tiny cherries, what a pain to pick!
Michelle - you're right about the garden goddesses - I keep wondering how long it can last. Is it too late for you to try again?
Janeanne - there's still plenty more, come on over and pull up a chair.... we'll need help eating the next corn crop.
We love to go to the market for vegetables when we are in Maui.
Now you can find the farmer's market at the Maui Mall and the Kaahumanu Shopping Center too (during the week), as well as the Saturday swap meet.
