The Maui News online reports that vodka enthusiasts will have a new product to look forward to. Maui Land and Pineapple's cannery in Kahului is now the testing ground and home for a new alcohol product made from sweet pineapples. Master distiller Mark Nigbur has created a unique vodka from pineapples and it's now being distributed to local restaurants and stores on Maui and Oahu.

Pau Maui is a genuine Maui product. Don't expect this handcrafted premium vodka to taste of pineapples though, as that's not the case. The sugars are all converted to alcohol leaving a clean crisp taste, not at all fruity. Maui Gold pineapples are an extra sweet variety that are being use for the mash.
With canned pineapples in Hawaii being a thing of the past, this new direction for the Hawaiian fruit should be a good thing for the economy.
I found out that you can buy the beautiful etched bottle at the Hawaii Liquor Superstore in Kahului, and also at the Rodeo General Store in Makawao. So enjoy your next martini with Pau Maui when you come to the islands - cheers!

Oh I love pineapples - and the flavored vodkas can be delightful - just a light essence of pineapple would be nice......expecially for those Chichi's :-)
Hi Liz - I haven't found out how much it costs yet, but I expect it will not be cheap.... just like most things here. Funny I haven't heard the term chichi's in a long time.... here they call them pina coladas.
Georgina, I know what I'll be tasting when I finally get there. Btw, I didn't know what chichi's were either, they are called Pina Coladas here as well.
costs $100! It's not flavored. gee, I miss Chilliwack...
oh, I forgot to add, chichi's are made with vodka, pina colada's with rum. Otherwise they are the same. I don't think anyone wants to put $100 vodka in a chichi. or anywhere else...
Carole - you heard the word - don't mix it - drink it straight!
Dave - oops you're right, I forgot my bartending 101. Can I put it in a Ceasar?
Georgina in Maui: Sounds yummy. Wish I was there to try the pineapple vodka. Hopefully this will help keep pineapple fields open and operating in the wonderful islands of Hawaii. I will be on the look out to see if the bottle makes it to the mainland.
I think I will stock up if I ever come out this way again. It sounds like a sweet drink.
Sounds like we might need an office tasting party
Georgina.
Caesar...no, drink yes... LOL! Sounds sweet....wow! Can you imagine $100. a bottle...I'm sipping...slowly! Karen
Now if you could only figure out how to make bio-fuel from the pinapple's you'd be set!!
On second thought...its currently SNOWING here in Colorado...pass the vodka!
Michelle - send me a qualified buyer who closes, and I'll send you a bottle!
Mike - likewise
Pete - What would you call it, when mixed with Absente? How about an Amnesia?
Karen - I meant the drink... bloody Caesar... it'a a Canadian thing
Sassy - this would be jet fuel! haha (not laughing at the snow)
I am all about this! A move to the Islands maybe in the cards if I get two of my favorite food groups in one!
Georgina,
I know that!...LOL! :-)
haha Jane - don't forget some mixed nuts to round out your diet
Karen - OK then cheers! have a good weekend.
